Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
Hi John, thank you for all the nice compleiments ;-)) You know, I think you just tought me something I never gave a thought about but, I too had wondered why there were two sizes of KM IDs. Your after-thought makes perfect sense.
The thing about ground dug items-it just really irks me especially because a soldires final resting place is disturbed by some greedy person and who's making a profit selling a deceased persons items. I've seen numerous websites that offer these items for sale and iv'e writen to several of them telling them my opinons about what they are doing.
Thank you for the nice words about the Pennant. Im not really much into LW collecting but, what you said is the main reason why I got this piece. Their craftsmanship on the items they made is simply fantastic. I'll probably never be able to afford a Regimental flag but, seeing a few examples of what those look like-is what got me interested in collecting cloth.
I was hoping that where you live was somewhere near Texas because there is going to be a big Militaria show in Houston, Texas sometime in October. I plan on buying a table, so I can sell off some items I don't want and that are military related.
Take care and best regards--Carl.

Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
I like medals so thats mostly what I have in my collection. I am currently waiting to receive my recent purchases. First a very nice collection of 16 Soviet medals with original documents all of which belonged to one Major Leonid Semashuk.
I am also waiting to receive a 27 picture photo grouping belonging to an unidentified IJN sailor.
Will post pics when I get my camera back.

Hi Mike, looking forward to seeing the new stuff.
The biggest grouping I have to date is: 1 Document and two awards. Guess i'll have to work on it a bit? ;-))

Hi John, very nice one indeed. If I can do so before I have to pack my books up for my move, i'll try to do some looking and see if I have anything on that unit. Nice badge. I think Ausbildung means that it is a training Battalion? Im going to feel real embarassed if I miss the mark on this one.

Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
Carl, save the blushes! Ausb does indeed mean the tag belonged to a soldier from a training battalion...
It would be most appreciated if you could find any information on the unit.

Obergefreiter Walter WinklerŽs small photo album with some 40 pics of ostfront.
He died according to sellerŽs description in the Belgorod battles July 1943.
IŽll receive the album in a few days.

Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
Hi John, here is some info you might be able to use ;-))
The Regiment these trainees would have gone to was in the 12th Panzer Division (formerly the) 2nd Infantry Division then 2nd Motorized Infantry Division.
Their homestation was in Stettin in Wehrkries 2.
The units making up this Division include:
29th Pz Rgmt.
5th & 25th PzGdr Rgmts,
2nd Pz Arty Rgmt,
22nd Motorcycle Btn,
2nd: Pz Recon and Anti-tank Btns,
32nd Pz. Pioneer Btn & 2nd Panzer Signals Btn.
When this Division was originally formed, it was formed as the 2nd Inf Div. This Division was created in Stettin and became a part of the Reichsheer in 1921. This division was made up primarily of Prussians. In 1935, it included the 5th 25th & 92nd Inf Rgmts. In 1936-1937, it was reformed again as the 2nd Motorized Inf Div. During the Summer of 1939, it's 92nd Mot Inf Rgmt was attached to the 60th Mot Inf Div-which became a permanent attachment in 1940.
The 2nd Mot Inf Div fought in Northern Poland & then in France-which was part of Wietersheims 14th Corps. In the Fall of 1940, it was reorganized as the 12th Panzer Division. In 1941, it next fought in Russia, as it was part of Army Group North-taking part in the Minsk encirclement, crossing of the Dnieper River and in the battles of: Smolensk and Mga; in the Northern Sector.
Next it was hit hard by the Soviet Winter offensive of 1941-1942, then withdrawn to Estonia to rest and refit. It was back in action soon fighting in the battles South of Leningrad in 1942, then transferred to Army Group Center. While with Army Group Center, it fought in the battle of Kursk in July 1943, & later on in the battles of the Middle Dnieper and Dneister.
This division transferred back to Army Group North in Jan 1944, but was too late to be of any help to stop the Soviets from breaking the siege of Leningrad, but it had distinguished itself in the retreat across the Baltic States. In the Summer of 1944, it tried to help prevent the encirclement of the 4th & 9th Armies, but it failed to do so and was driven into the Kurland Pocket; in Sept 1944.
In early 1945, it was withdrawn into Northern Germany by sea, and ended the war at Battlegroup strength-fighting in East Prussia.
Some of the commanders of this hard-fighting division were:
GenLt Fedor von Bock, (1931-1934)
GenLt Bader (1939)
GenLt Ludwig Cruwell (1940)
GenLt Josef Harpe (1940-1942)
GenLt Walter Wessel (1942-1943)
GenMaj Baron Erpo von Bodenhausen (1943-1945)
Hope this is some use foe yo? ;-D
Take care and best regards-Carl.
