Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
Carl I will call my friend tonight and tell him about the info you got for him. In the meantime I have found more info. In 1944 it says they withdrew rapidly from the Eastfront . This is true they went to France for a few weeks and with the remnants of some of the Westfront occupation troops they returned to Southehrn Ukraine and ended up in Budapest. One thing is not entirely true though: It says the Division was formed with people from Westphalien and Rhineland, but my friend's dad was from Leipzig. So maybe initially , but not after 1944.

Thanks Carl. I have been 'toying' with the idea of applying for a firearms licence and buying a live scoped 1891/30 Mosin Nagant rifle.
My friend (Pegasus) has a live K98 sniper rifle and often suggests I buy a 'live one' so I can accompany him on the range...I think he needs a friend to compete against...

Hi Skipper, you got that right. I'm currently working on a small display. I have a seven place ribbon bar that had belonged to: the Duke of Mecklinburg/Schwerin: Franz Friedrich von Grossherzog IV. I recently purchased an unused postcard with his image on it-to give the ribbon bar a "face" to go along with it. Now all I need is a good Bio to go with this-then I intend on having it framed. Another item I plan on working on making into a display for-is my I.D. Disk and Cap Talley (which belonged to a Kriegsmarine Sailor who was stationed at Wilhelmshaven. I have an ID disk, postcard and talley. Sadly though, none of the items are belonging to the same man.

Hi Skipper, that's the problem with both Order of Battle booke I have: One was basically copied from the other but thankfully Mitcham spent alot of money for his research. The recently published ""udated version"" of this book :Published by: Stackpole: is an exact reprint of the book I have only--they published it in several volumes which will cost you about $160.00 or so to get what I got for $30.00 ;-)) I have not had the chance to do more than a cursery comparance with the book I have and with all the Stackpole volumes I looked through. Those might have more info on battles and such-but not sure?
I suspect your correct in that by late war, that guys dads unit might have been getting replacements from whereever they could. In reading Mitchams book, you can see when a few of the Wehrkries systems might be breaking down-and with your friends dad coming from Leipzig; makes perfect sense. Thanks for adding that info.

Hi John, quite welcome. And if you ever get to travel here, i'd be glad to let you fire the ones I have. I don't yet have a scope for it but I will be looking for one when I can afford it. Or....I guess I can by a copy of one from Shotgun News or someplace like that.
Hope you get that license. I used to go to firing ranges all the time myself. I could easily spend about 4 or so hours out at one. ;-))

Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
Carl I forgot to say, that the soldier whose militaria is mentionned mentionned earlier here got wounded near the Czech south border which would also make sense because his unit fought near Budapest in Hungary which isn't too far away. I hope to have more info tomorrow.

Hi Skipper, Kai
Skipper, sorry I had not seen this earlier to reply to you in a decent amount of time but, thanks for the info and it certainly does narrow it down a bit. As im about to relocate to another city, im not sure when ill have access to my stuff but, i'll try to dig that stuff out as soon as possible.
Kai, great buys! It looks like your collecting pics with a sorts of theme to them. I recently decided to narrow my collecting down to only one branch-the Army.

Thanx Carl! Yes, East we go all the way....
Anyway, I enjoy pics and especially photo albums because I love the stories they hold.

Hi Kai, quite welcome. Also, im starting to get interested in collecting photos again. If Otto would ever get around to posting those photos that I sent him several years ago, you would see some really nice pics. Im also thinking like you, and thinking of collecting pics that onlly has an Eastern Front theme to them-as most of what I do have-do.

Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
easier to place and remove, less dusting, on it goes. Something is always special about select photos, was cleaning my office which has become a total joke this weekend before my trip overseas, correlating and placing things into needed files, packing; pretty hard to do with uniforms and medals even.
Photos are true history, good pick up Kai

Re: What's your newest Militaria purchases?
Erich, any chance to cross the Maginot line and pay me a visit, or will you get stranded in Speyer and stick to Mosel wine?
