I would guess in shear numbers, that India and China would be high on the list, however that only looks good on paper. China had big numbers in WWII but was not orginized at all.

Well, i'm pretty sure China will rank in the biggest Army at least. I think i heard somewhere that they have 1.5 Million soldiers (or can easily attain that number). You cant use WWII as an example...China was in the middle of a Civil War during WWII. It is now a well-trained, well-equipped army. Combined with its economy, its going to be the next Hegemon (if you couldnt guess, the US is already in its downfall) though that idea is rather scary for more then one reason.

I'm not sure about India though. Just because a country has a large population, doesnt mean it has a large military. Remember, India still has the Caste System, so only a very few are in the Warrior class.

Russia, obviously, ranks up there, and so does the UK. Mostly in Airforce and Navy, not so much as troops.

Hey thanks for the links

funny statement i saw in the 2nd link was

Canada has approximately 4,000 sea-going personnel, considerably fewer than the crew of an American Nimitz Class aircraft carrier.

Also, I would of thought that the U.S. would have a bigger army! I know there more and likely the most advanced.

The US has been going through some downsizing since the early 90's. the Army is a fraction of its size due to overseas base closures. this is the reason why our troops now have had their tours in Iraq extended and the Army is having problems with recruitment.

The size does not matter
BTW Turkish Armed Forces have about 700.000 personnel.

Correction, wiki says "The Turkish Armed forces, with a combined strength of 1,043,550[13] uniformed personnel, is the second largest standing armed force in NATO, after the United States of America."

Kai, if by conscription you mean compulsory military service, Greece also has conscription, because of us.

In 3 weeks I will be conscripted to

Thanks Za, two possibilities, 6 months as a private (no salary), 12 months as a Lieutenant. (with about 700 € salary )

If I did not have a university degree I would serve 15 months as private.(no salary)

God knows where I will be sent.

For more information. Conscription in Turkey

I hope you can do lots of push ups and sit ups and run 10 miles and like to be screamed at by an ugly drill instructor.

I think they call it a "character building experience".

TA, you are scaring me

Speaking of present day military powers, here is a Japanese Mitsubishi F-2. LoL I would bet all my money on that it is an F-16.

"Article 9:
Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. 2) In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.

Things have changed since 1946.

In France there is no more conscription since around 1996 (well as far as I can remember).

Alas, the conscription system was ended too late for me, and I lost 10 months of my life in the army :'(
