Military History
It goes without saying that we are all WWII buffs here but I was wondering if anyone reads up on any other period of military history besides WWII.
Personally, I am interested in anything having to do with American military history but especially anything from WWII and on. Korea, Vietnam, various smaller operations such as Grenada, Panama, and Somalia, and also I read up a lot on our current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Besides American wars, other conflicts that catch my interest are any of the Arab-Israeli Wars, Iran-Iraq War, Soviet-Afghan War, the First Indochina War, bascially any 20th-21st century wars.
The two wars I spend most of my time researching are WWII and the Vietnam War but as of late I have become more and more interested in the Korean War as well.
What about you? Which period of military history do you study?

Re: Military History
I used to read a lot about WW1 : Western Front and Naval battles in particular.
I actually decided to focus on WWII because I just don't have room in my house for any more books.....

Re: Military History
Maybe some Napoleonic wars , I did buy a book recently describing every day that the French etc troops spent in Moscow 1812 (?) , but otherwise the same thing as Martin said, it´s rather impossible to read that many things...

Re: Military History
WW2 is my main 'area of interest' but recently that has moved to other conflicts of the 20th Century.
WW1, Freikorps, Russian Civil War, Spanish Civil War, Post-War Partisans, Indo-China, Vietnam War, Iran-Iraq War and the Indo-Pakistan War are all recent research interests along with a more general interest in the history of the Middle East in the last 100 odd years.
Other than that I have just started reading up on the American Civil War as a friend is moving to Virginia and I would like some idea of the conflict before I visit him, as he is a big civil war buff and we are going to tour a few battlefields.
My interests lie predominately in the 20th Century but I also have a apssing interest in British Colonial history but mainly that of the Far East rather than the usual India and Africa.

Re: Military History
I am up to par with the Roman Empire, its rulers, way of life and of course, its wars. I am currrently studing the American Civil War. Finding out more than what the common American knows or is taught.

Re: Military History
This is a tought one, as WWII is my primary interest, I try to read up on as much as I can. Napoleonic warfare, the Mongols and Ancient civilizations ( Romans, Greeks and the Egyptians ) would probably be the next to follow.
Though now that I think about it, I am a huge fan of the American civil war as well.

Re: Military History
I like aircraft and the politics and history that go with them.
WWII had the most strides foward in aviation going from bi-planes to early jets in just 6 years.

Re: Military History
Whether it be WWII, American Civil War or Medieval conflict my fascination has always been with the weaponology of that period. For WWII - aircraft first and submarines/U-boots second; Civil War - fortifications, artillery and naval weapons; Medieval - balistas, bows, crossbows and the first "cannons."

Re: Military History
Let's see:
Naval history from just about any period.
Technology, particularly electronics as applied to warfare throughout the 20th century to present.
The human dimension of war....things like morale, leadership etc.
I do alot of quantification of stuff on many periods. I have articles finished or in progress on things like:
19th Century artillery effectiveness
Allied ASW weapons of WW 2
An analysis of Tsushima and the effects on warship design and development that followed.
Tactical mobility of AFV from historical data.
"The Wheel" A theory on the interrelationship of leadership and management and its application to organizations.
Modelling modern artillery effectiveness.
I'm thinking of doing one on earlier missile weapons like the bow along with one on the orgainzational effectiveness of ancient armies.
Modelling advance rates
Japanese radar systems and their development
Soviet radar and its development
Well, a bunch of stuff

Re: Military History
I love to take a subject in the 20/21century, be it a battle a skirmish or even better one persons role in an action. Even a major war, then get as much info from all sides that I can on the politics that led to the thing, be they military or civilian politics. Annalyse em then come to the normal conclusion that all politicians are liars, cheats and use the military as their own little playthings on occasions. To some extenc especially in recent years I would include the top brass of the military in that cheating and lying also.
But nearly always will feel for the troops involved. They like I once did just do as they are told. But they are not stupid, they know what goes on. But we join and we do.

Re: Military History
World War II has been a life long interest along with Vietnam and lately the US Civil War- Army of the Patomac mostly as it gets more interesting when you can read about a action and then go and walk the ground, and the little details, like finding out the Army of Northern Virgina got shelled three miles from where we live from guns that were in a fort a block away from our apartment.

Re: Military History
I am a fan of well, of course, World War Two. I want to hear everthing about the Germans and Russians. I am interested about WW1 too and I barely know anything about WW1.
I also like Korea, War of 1812, and fictional wars too!
