J. Russell Coffey, the oldest known surviving U.S. veteran of World War I, has died. The retired teacher, one of only three U.S. veterans from the "war to end all wars," was 109.

RIP Soldier, though you were lucky never to see combat, it's good to see your dedication.
On a side note... I know this may seem a little morbid, but the article also says this:

No cause of death has been determined, she said Friday. His health began failing in October.

Umm... could 109 years old possibly be the cause of death? I can't stand that when people always wish to investigate the deaths of extremely elder people. Like when someone turns 90, is already in bad health, dies, and the family thinks it was of wrong doing on the medical side... Hello...

About this time last year, there were approximately 30 WWI American Vets still living. On Thanksgiving Day same year, there were approximately 50. These numbers were provided by various news stories form those time periods. It's really sad to hear that there are only two American and only one Canadian WWI Vets still living. :-(
Rest in Peace J. Russell Coffey.

Actually , at least in Finland, we need to make a diagnosis for the death certificate and I recall that there´s no code for old age nor do I think it would be accepted by the higher authorities if I tried to use it....weird but true. You cannot die of old age...

Oh my! Time is a killer and does not cooperate in recording history from those who were there.

Re: Oldest U.S. WWI vet dies in Ohio at 109
We can count the survivors here on one hand now. One used to live a few miles away from my home. Actually there is one more to be accounted for because the gentleman was Italian in WWI and emigrated to France + changed his nationality after the war. I Wonder if he is still alive? A few years ago another vet was recorded for the first time in a retirment home. Nobody knew about him and he did not bother until somebody told him he should apply for veteran status. He was something like 105 years old at the time.

Last I heard, which has been about a year or so ago, I think there were something like Seven WWI Vets still living in England.

I remember visiting a site last year which keeps the records up to date for all nations. I will try to find it.
