Default Landscapes of War; Methods of Investigation workshop

Dear all (and with the usual apology for cross-posting),

For those of you based in the UK and interested in recent conflict archaeology, you are invited to attend the second seminar in the Landscapes of War project, which is taking place on 3rd April 2008. The seminar (programme below) will be at Coventry TechnoCentre and could be popular. Please contact Kate Pallister at CoventryUniversity to secure a free place.

Concept of the seminar
Landscapes of War is a trans-national Project co-funded by the European Commission under the Programme Culture 2000. Following an earlier seminar on Public History, describing physical and intellectual access to a wide variety of conflict heritage sites, this second seminar considers Working Practices. A principal aim of our Landscapes of War project is to develop, discuss and disseminate examples of good recording practice - how to document and describe what are often extensive, contested and sometimes enigmatic and ambiguous buildings and monuments. Landscapes of War present particular challenges to archaeologists, historians and the local communities who live in areas characterised by past conflict. These landscapes exist in all spatial and geographical dimensions: on land, underground, in the air and at sea; even - for the Cold War - in space. Many of these places are well known; others have remained closely guarded secrets. This now is a common past, in which we all share an interest. How best to document and describe these places for the benefit of this and future generations is an integral part of our project.

Scope of the seminar
To explore and assess the various Working Practices as they are applied to twentieth-century landscapes of war in Europe.

Kind regards

Kate Pallister
