Default R.A.F Dollarbeg Scotland

I am trying to find out about R.A.F Dollarbeg in Scotland. I believe it was something to do with Radio Direction Finding (early Radar). My Grandfather was shot and killed there in 1941. Something of a family mystery as my Grandmother was told very little about what happened??.
Regards,
Mike Berry

Hi Mike, and welcome to the forums!
Now that's interesting. Dollarbeg lies 2 miles to the south of the town of Dollar in Clackmannanshire, at the junction of the B9140 and the B913. The latter road leads to the Kincardine Bridge. Its a very isolated private house in its own grounds, and from 1941 to 1944 was the HQ of N0. 72 Wing RAF which controlled all the radar stations in Scotland.
The wing had a radar calibration flight at Turnhouse airfield (now Edinburgh airport)on 21/5/41, and from the end of March '41 had responsibility for all radar stations from the Tees to the Forth. At a later date they transferred stations to 73 wing in England to enable 72 to cover just Scotland, and on the disbandment of No. 79 Wing on 30/6/43, No. 72 took over stations in Ulster too. No 72 was disbanded itself on 15/5/44.
The house lay empty for many years, and was recently converted into flats. I don't have any pics unfortunately, as I wrote to the last owners several times over the years asking for permission to look around and never got an answer.
Do you have any more info yourself? Any relevant info would be in the The National Archives of the United Kingdom at Kew, coded "AIR".

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for your reply. My Grandfather is George Bell 1371429 R.A.F. He was killed 15th May 1941 At R.A.F Dollarbeg . Cause of death gunshot wound to chest, I assume some sort of accident but my Grandmother was told nothing. I contacted the Air historical branch several years ago and was told they had his file but they were very vague about teling me any other details!!!
regards,Mike

Hi Mike,
Glad I could help. It sounds very likely that this was the precursor to a courtmartial; in that case, I think the records are still classified for about another 40 years.
However, I think that as a relative of the victim you could demand to see the files. Have you thought of lobbying your MP to apply pressure on the authorities? You could argue that it isn't really still in the public interest to keep the records classified, and see what they say.
You could try Clackmannanshire Council Archives to see if there's anything mentioned in the local paper The Alloa Advertiser. The archives used to be in the library in Drysdale St in Alloa, but they may have moved.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on.

Hi Gordon,
Many thanks for your interesting reply. I had not thought about the Court Marshall issue. My Gran had to get Manny Shinwell her local MP at the time to bring her case to Parliment because the Air Force would not give her a war widows pension because my Grand father was killed in the UK not on active duty!!!!!!!!

Mike
