Default Great Britains Last Colonial War

As I'm sure some of you are aware 27 years ago today Great Britains last colonial war started- The Falklands War.

Today I'm remembering a lad from my now demolished school who died in the conflict:

Marine Keith Philips

The Falklands War was a short but sharp war. The Argentinians Air Force surprised the RN with those Exocet missiles.

The Exocet was one of the Argentinians Aces thats for sure. I'm not so sure the Royal Navy was surprised by them though.

The British government was having talks with France about further shipments before the first one was used.

Cheers

The French were extremely helpful in that regard. The secret squirrels had their work cut out stopping them getting any reloads. To which the French played their part in stopping.
They also played dog fights over Yeovel with Harriers and Mirages for training purposes.

Annimosities with Maggie were put to one side for the time being.

I'd recommend reading 'Forgotten Voices of the Falklands War' if anyone is interested. One thing is for sure, you'll find a few suprises in it.

YouTube - An Ungentlemanly Act (12/12)

I loved this play at the time I watched it years ago. Not 100 percent factual but a docudrama play for the time.

Ive never quite understood the Falklands war. Long ago i did read about it, but it still seems kind of ridiculous. Britian attacking a colony that is, in this modern age.

Suppose that explains why you dont understand then Skywalker,,,not being insulting, But Britain didnt attack anyone.

Alexander Haig: We are trying to de-escalise a war.

Margaret Thatcher: So am I. But you do not do it by appeasement. You increase its chances. You see this table? This was where Neville Chamberlain sat in 1938 when he spoke on the wireless about the Czechs as "far away people about whom we know nothing and with whom we have so little in common". Munich! Appeasement! A world war followed because of that irresponsible, woolly-minded, indecisive, slip-shod attitude and the deaths of 45 million people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom Enders: The fact that we have to treat Britain and Argentina even-handedly for the purpose of negotiation...

Margaret Thatcher: How DARE you treat us even-handedly? Argentina is the aggressor, the invader. A fourth-rate, cruel, unstable, corrupt, brutal regime with no morals or scruples whatever! They torture and murder their political opponents by the most ghastly Nazi methods. And this is the regime you wish to give even a foothold over the British citizens?

Maybe that will help you understand a little more.

I personally didn't like the woman, but she spoke for the rights of a people to chose the govt of their own violition that day.

Some would rather have an invasion and a dictatorall regime over free people. Some would not.

I am actually writing a short article about the Falklands, which I find extremely fascinating, specially since I know many British and Aregentinian people whose views are as opposed as they are sensitive. And I absolutely love the Baroness Thatcher!

No, I understand perfectly...Its like our Marmite or the Australian Vegemite spread....You either love it or hate it...there are no half measures where marmite or Maggie are concerned.
