Default ww1 books

Im posting this here as i cant see where else to put it as being ww1 it does not fit the ww2 B&P thread.Last week while visiting my Mum with the kids I went into a antique/secondhand place that has a fair few second hand books, some of which that are 6 for a £1 so my daughter found 3 kids books, and my eye was drawn to 3 old books sat on a bookcase all dusty and frankly looking like they had come straight out of a attic. So I picked one up and found that they were 3 vols about the Great war, after a quick flick through and noticing that thet were pub in 1916, I added them to my daughters books and paid my pound.I have since spent the last week looking through said vols of which I have 3 4 and 6 pub by The Greshem publishing company and having checked found out there are 9 vols in all pub between 1915 and 1920 the vols I have covering Feb 1915-Aug 1915, Aug 1915 Dec 1915, & June 1916-Feb 1917.Now having gone through them as well as I can short of reading them they have to be the best books I have come across ref the First world war covering every country involved and aspects of thier involment I had no idea of, as well as details of medals awarded to individuals and deaths of noted winners. There are articles relating to the deaths of Kitcthener, Capt F.C Selous, Major General Mercer and many others that are so readable and intresting and the pictures do the text justice as well, with photos and in every volume 3 plates showing a senior military figure or royal from all the countries involved I could go on all day but i wont now I need to find the other 6 vols

I tell a lie...not my fault, sounded the same.

But the swearing in my house at the moment..unbelievable.....not more bloody books..when you going to take them back upstairs then...

Mine have just been retrieved...in fact they are A popular History of the Greay War 6 volumes, with over 1000 maps, illustrations and pictures, published by Fleetway in London no date of publishing but goes up to 1925.

The things are like yours, amazing. I'm busy for the next few days...If I'm needed call Stefan, he can deal with any wars that might need any stupid British comments that may errupt in the meantime.

You should see my house! Books are everywhere, piled up on the floor, even in the hall, the office is covered with militaria, the garage crowded with junk, the cars outside, the bookshelves covered with war relics. Mrs Skipper is screaming of course... Yesterday I came back with a French 1951 Klepper Kradmelder raincoat. It just looks like the German one. It is still in the hallway, just like the French 1939 boots I got Sunday.

Noting in mine about 1914 xmas truce, but to be honest, both are written too close to the outcome of the war to expect the British to admit to such a thing happening. We still have a social system and an Empire with the home system to protect at that time.

So I wouldnt really expect anything in print at that time.

Although the brief chronology in each book of mine says on 25th December 1914
Allies seize part of village of Boiselle, North East of Albert.
Also make progress north of Roye
Futile German air raid over Sheerness.
British air raid on Cuxhaven.
Several British naval airmen assisted by the Arethusa and Undaunted, together with unknown submarines attack enemy warships off Cuxhaven

'Partworks' were very popular in the Great War period - other ones to watch out for are 'The Times History Of The War' and 'War Illustrated'.

Obviously, as contemporary publications they are going to 'toe the line' so you won't find much about controversial issues - nonetheless they are very interesting and contain many interesting photos......

Your not kidding...My great great uncle MaxwellFritz junior was unable to pick a side due to his natural mother being Austrian and his father Japanese/Croatian so in effect ww1 tore my family apart. His brother though fought on the western front...Weymouth sea front 1966 oldest teddy boy in town but we wont go into that one.

Here we have the first trials of mobile phone technology whilst warfare, and its technology was still in its electronic infancy, but we can see the resemblance to todays modern machines.

And as uaual, even in war time, defence cuts were prevelant in all forces...Including the early air arms.

Hey Skippper, ever since your query I have been looking through each vol, for a mention of the 1914 christmas truce and I found this. "Nor did we call a truce in the trenches on this christmas of 1916." also "One such attempt was made to celebrate christmas in the neighbourhood of Lesboeufs, when some fifty Germans crept towards our lines at night-time .Our men and machine guns however, were ready for them many were killed or wonded and 18 remained in our hands as prisoners. All these quotes are from the british point of view hope this is helpful I certeinly found it very intresting.
