Default Historical Disclosures

Hi

Anyone know how I can get round the red tape at Historical disclosures in Glasgow?
I want my g grandfather's service record, they won't give it to me till I provide a death certificate. He has passed away but we can't find any record of it. If he was alive he would be 106 and we would know about that one.
