Default need help with finding records

I am needing help with records.

My dad never knew his real father or that side of the family. His father was in the Army Air Corps in WW2. According to the National Archives record I got online, he joined May 14 1942. Under Branch it says: Branch Immaterial-Warrent Officers.

I sent off for his record, but recieved a letter saying it was destroyed in the 1973 fire, but they can send me a final pay voucher. What would be on the final pay voucher? My husband who was in the Army says it will be just like his LES. Will this final pay voucher tell me what unit he was assigned to?

Also my father's uncle, on that same side of the family was in the Navy. I found his grave listed on the internet. He was buried in the Crownsville Vet. Cem in Maryland. On the marker it says AMM3-US Navy WW2. What is AMM3? And is there a way for me to get his records as well?

I also wonder if maybe someone here either served with them or maybe a family member knew them. William (Bill) Gabor was in the Army Air Corps from Maryland and Joseph Gabor was in the Navy also from Maryland.

A little background so you will understand why I don't have any family to ask if they have the records.

My dad was adopted by his mother's parents. He never knew he was adopted until he later found his birth certificate and adoption papers while trying out for football. He did when he married my mom have a friend who was in the FBI search for his father. He did find him, but decided to not contact him since he was married and had children. He didn't want to cause problems. He does know that his father flew planes in WW2.
If he knows anymore, he isn't sharing, he just now showed me his adoption papers.

Funny side note, my dad was going to join the Air Force to fly planes when he graduated college, and I wanted to join the Air Force to fly jets and now my youngest daughter wants to go to the Air Force Academy and be a stealth bomber pilot. I guess a love of planes and flying runs in the family.

Sorry this post is so long, and thanks for any help.

K

Hello. Don't know how much assistance I can provide but there are others here that are more knowledgable. But this I know:

Aviation Machinist's Mate = Assemble, service and repair airplanes and airplane engines. Splice aircraft wiring. Know principles and theory of flying.

Similar to the current LES. It is a receipt of his final pay which will show what unit he was assigned to when discharged, the pay period and last held rank. Here's a sample: http://cyberreviews.skwc.com/bdmckay...payvoucher.jpg

You may have already seen this or done it but just in case, here is a pretty good link with info on obtaining records

Thanks for the link PzJgr, I hadn't seen that before. And thanks for the definition of AMM. The pay voucher sounds like it will help me out. I know my dad would like to see it.

It seems like your relative was part of a ground crew that maintained aircrafts. By knowing the Group Squadron etc... it will be possible to find out where he was based and whether he worked on fighters or bombers.
