you said you know where to get the French Liberation Medal.. can you tell me?
Sandy, when this medal was first authorized by the French Government it was considered a foreign award by the U.S.Army and could be worn on the uniform. The Army changed it to a commemorative in the 50's and is now sold as a commemorative. It is about ten down on the right at the website below. All that was needed to certify, when they were giving this award, is proof of service in France during the liberation--like a DD214 with the Normanry or Northern France Camapign listed. The Liberation medal you have displayed was issued as a commemorative by the French Government for the 50year celebration of the liberation--usually called the Golden Jubilee. The one with the Statue of Liberty that he got in the late 90s must be another commemorative that I'm not familar with. The French was truly thankful of the Veterans for their sacrifice during the liberation and deminstrated it with these medals. I got my brother a beautiful brest badge for the 60th celibration.

I did forget to mention.. in the shadow box under the pin that says Utah beach is a ribbon with a heart with a star in it.. after searching the web I seen that and found out that it stood for a momther with one son in the war.. I remembered when my uncle passed and we were cleaning out my great grandmothers house I found one just like that in the house.. so in the box is my great grandmothers son in service pin for my pa.. I kept it cuz I remember seeing pics of her with it on her jacket.. I'm glad that I found it and kept it.. I think it will be more touching for him as I do not think he ever seen it...

Can't take credit for buying it--I heard France was giving it to qualified veterans with the stipulation they had to go to France to get it. I sent them a copy of his 214 showing he was wounded in Normandy on July 15, 1944 and because of his age and complication of the wounds received in France he was unable to make the trip. They sent it certified mail with a letter of appreciation.
I located the Army Regulation (AR600-8-22 6-9) on the arrowhead device just in case someone is following this thread and wants to be certain about the proper placement. I believe they should award one for each assault also, but they didn't ask my opinion :-)
6–9. Arrowhead The arrowhead is a bronze replica of an Indian arrowhead 1/4-inch high. It denotes participation in a combat parachute jump, helicopter assault landing, combat glider landing, or amphibious assault landing, while assigned or attached as a member of an organized force carrying out an assigned tactical mission. A Soldier must actually exit the aircraft or watercraft, as appropriate, to receive assault credit. Individual assault credit is tied directly to the combat assault credit decision (see para 7–25) for the unit to which the Soldier is attached or assigned at the time of the assault. Should a unit be denied assault credit, no assault credit will accrue to the individual Soldiers of that unit. It is worn on the service and suspension ribbons of the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, Korean
Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Only one arrowhead will be worn on any ribbon. AR 600–8–22 • 11 December 2006 75

Re: Finished Shadow Box for my Grandfather
Sandy I have never had a give up attitude, but in my relatives case there is simply nothing there, especially for my Grandfather as his missions were kept secret and still are. My German relatives are indeed very closed mouthed with 3 cousins serving in the German Heer and 2 in the Luftwaffe during the war. Frustrated I have been .....

I did not know that.. I see why you would have a hard time gettin information.. Sorry if I sounded rough.. I am so for anyone doing this stuff for the vets I wish in your case you could get the info.. Even my grandfather says that the Germans were very trained and a tough enemy.. So the history from there would be cool to know too..

Re: Finished Shadow Box for my Grandfather
if this is the one you are looking for it's quite hard to get and was last awarded in.... 1947.
I had a spare copy only a few weeks ago , but traded it with Kai Petri.
The Médaille de la Résistance was given to approximately 44,000 living persons and 20,000 posthumously, awarded both for membership of the Free French forces and for participation in the metropolitan clandestine Resistance during the German occupation of France in World War II. Higher deeds were rewarded with the Ordre de la Libération. The medal ceased to be awarded on 31 December 1947 in Indochina and globally on 31 March 1947.

Re: Finished Shadow Box for my Grandfather
must say I have much more in the way of photo documentation on my Father in law serving in the USN in the pacific on two ships, one a tin-can. In fact we presented , we meaning my wife, her two bro's a memorial of pics and his text in words to my mother in law during the war with old letters things he had not seen for over 40 plus years. Sandy as I mentioned how powerful this will be for you, your family and your Grandfather when he first sees this. my own Father -in-law when first looking at the book was into it for over 4 hours sitting and the memories of those difficult times just flowed like hot maple syrup over pancakes, we were all beaming and he had a small tear forming from his left eye-lid............ funny what you are able to pick up and lodge in your brain - those little almost non necessary moments
