Default Info on 383rd Anti-Aircraft Battalion

Good Day-

My grandfather, from Cleveland, OH., was in the Pacific with the U.S. Army during WWII (from '43-'45) and was a member of the 383rd Anti-Aircraft, Anti-Pillbox, Anti-Personnel Battalion. From what I gathered, I think his battalion was part of the 37th Division(?). He informed me that he fought in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines (by way of Texas and California). I've tried using the internet to find out everything I could about his battalion, but there's not a lot of information on his specific battalion.

I'm hoping somebody can provide more information on the 383rd Anti-Aircraft battalion to me; Specifically, I'm looking for the insignia of the 383rd , but any and all info provided will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Default Re: Info on 383rd Anti-Aircraft Battalion

383rd AAA Auto-Weapons Battalion (Semimobile)

AAA=Anti-Aircraft Artillery.

Formed 10 Jan 1943 at Fort Bliss, Texas as a coast artillery battalion. Redesignated AAA 30 Apr 1943 Disbanded 30 Jun 1946 in Japan

Departed Portland SubPort of Embarkation 23 Mar 1944
Moved to New Guinea 21 Apr 1944
Moved to Philippines 13 Mar 1945

Credited with Letye and New Guinea Campaigns.

They probably were firing the larger AA guns, possibly the 90mm.

Finding much on this unit is going to be tough, at best. I am willing to suspect that they probably were attached to the 37th Infantry Division for only a portion of their overseas service, and they were on the Phililppines at about the same time. However, I would suspect that they wore the patch of the Corps or Army that commanded them and not that of the 37th ID, since they were not part of the division TO&E*. The AAA 383rd was most likely assigned to a Corps or Army initially, then seconded to the division when needed, then withdrawn when the need passed. The Army was most likely the US 6th Army and the Corps, the XIV Corps, but I cannot tell you which one exactly.

*Table of Organization and Elements.
