Looking for information on my Great Uncle
Hello, My name is Patrick and I am looking for information on my Great Uncle for my mother, whose birthday is this Wednesday. She has always wanted to know more about her uncle, my great uncle, and I recently started looking into it. I obtained a death record and I will post a picture of it here, but it's not enough for my mother and me. I want to know a little of his background, hopefully you can help. I've been researching a lot but haven't found much information on him, just information on the VF-15 and Hawaii. Any help is very very appreciated, thanks. Also, I tried to complete one of the requests with evetRecs but I didn't mail the form yet for one reason. The reason is it says how are you related which I answered the next kin of the veteran or something like that, but then the next question is asking if you are his daughter, brother, sister, son, etc. and my mother is just his niece however she is the next kin. I don't want her to get charged with anything so is there anyway we can still obtain his records or should we try to call them and see about it?
Anyways, here's the link to the picture I scanned, there is a second page but it just talks about Grumman increasing their seat safety belts quality. Some of the words are worn out so if you could help me identify them, it would be nice. Like for an example, where it says 44 12812, I want to know if that's his service number or not. Especially, just any information you can find on him specifically.

Again, thank you very, very much.

They have an online presence. I think you might be able to get limited access as is. On the otherhand if you can find a decendent or if he didn't have any you may have a better shot at it.

He didn't have any, he died before he was married. So does that mean I could get the papers?

Re: Looking for information on my Great Uncle
Patrick, first welcome to the forum. As to your questions, I would apply for the records using the form you have. If you have not already done so, read through this thread, it's very helpful. Requesting Copies of Military Personnel Records
The worst they can do is deny your claim, but I think you have a decent shot at finding what they have. Two words of caution; there was a fire in 1973 that destroyed many ww2 records, but they can reconstruct a lot from other sources, and you need patience. It can take a few months before you hear anything. Good luck.

Re: Looking for information on my Great Uncle
I don't know where your uncle lived, but here is a link to about a dozen George F. Butler records from NARA. Could one of them be him?
Please Wait...
The number you show is probably not his service number as I believe they were all 8 digits long.

I don't think any of them on the list was him, he was in the Navy reserves. By the way, thanks for the help everybody so far, I really appreciate it!

Re: Looking for information on my Great Uncle
I've been researching my Step-Fathers Uncle (a WWII vet that was KIA) for about 2 months now, and have gotten nowhere with the military archives. On all accounts, they have sent replies saying that the information is not available.
Just the other day, I received my Uncle's (a Korean War vet who died in 1982) records that until last week were unavailable. My cousin (his son) had tried numerous time to get his records with on luck. The solution was to hire a professional military researcher. I found a pro here: Military Records
I used Aardvark, because they had a website and accepted PayPal. These people do this every day, and actually go to the archives in person to get you the info that you need within day, not months as your typical snail mail requests go. I've got a second job in the wings for my Step-Fathers Uncle, which is pending his Mother's signature.
Keep in mind, having a next-of-kins signature will be required if ALL records are desired; otherwise your request falls under the Freedom of Information Act.
As a side note, my Uncle's file was considered a 'burn' record. I've attached a copy of one of his documents to show the extent of the damage.
