Never thought it could get to this...

As kids these days only want to play PS2 or X-box etc etc the super markets are forced to sell the models out for lesser price because they donīt sell well anymore. Just a couple of weeks ago I bought some Tigers, panthers, PZ IVīs etc for 50% discount...

Now THAT was a good day!

i know what you mean kai. it is unfortuanatly a dying hobby. that is getting old. have a look at the results of this poll on another site:
http://forums.delphiforums.com/medre...es/?msg=1341.1
this shows you just what i mean.
Great bargains. the best ones i find are when you look under the table in the bargain boxes at show.
I've just finished my latest project, my first tank in several years and was quite pleased with the results.

Sad but true.

When I was at school in the mid-60s ( sorry guys! ) absolutely everyone made kits.

Simple pleasures, I guess...

" I donīt know what to do with it. It doesnīt fit the video recorder!"

I guess today you could say "the computerīs disc slot...??"

I used to do all kinds of modeling.

My absolute favorite kit was a 1/35th scale of The Red Barons Fokker DR1 Tri-plane.

The one I hated the most to build (because it took forever to complete--thanks to hundreds of tiny details to it) was my model of the Bismarck.

I used to build dioramas and used to sell them to museums. One of my favorite was one that had about 25 1/72nd scale figures on it. It was a scene during the Zulu Wars--which took place at Roarkes Drift. I had 5 British soldiers defending part of the Corral fence-with one soldier wounded and being cared for--while several Zulus were dead/wounded or in the act of dying as the rest of their group continued their attack on the fence.

My least favorite modles to build are (sorry Erich--Martin ) are airplanes. Favs are land vehicles.

Bish--on a side note--I did find one of my early pencil drawings just yesterday. It is of a group of Confederate Infantry on the attack. If you want it--you can have it--just let me know.

I'll let you be the judge on whether the piece is good or not.

Hi Duce--thank you very much for the nice compliments.

About 15 years ago I was active in babysitting alot of neighborhood kids. I didnt charge their parents any fees for watching them. What I did was encouraged them to read and to draw or build models.

Anyway--I used to be able to draw and some drawings I liked very well with othern not so well.

I did some in Pencil, some in Ink, and some in fine-point pen--which were harder to do but were my favorites with two exceptions.

I did some superhero stuff (Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Punisher, I think two with the Fantastic Four, and I forget who else. I did two nice Pencils with Spiderman and the Punisher--they actually turned out very well.

Anyway--I used to draw for the kids and gave most of the stuff away. I used to have about 20-30 more drawings that were stored in a Cedar Chest but--I dont know if they are still in the chest. It is in my Brother-in-laws storage out of town. When I do get the Cedar Chest--ill look to see if anything still survives and if so--ill be more than glad to let you have your pick.

This might be a few months from now though.

Also--I no longer can draw a straight line due to a bad car accident I had back in early 1992. This guy had just bought a brand new pickup truck from the car lot--just drove off their property and ran a stop sign. Well--unfortunately--I happened to be driving in that direction that the stop sign when he decided to run the stop sign.

All I saw was a green blur (his truck) and the next thing I remember seeing was the front end of my '79 Chevy Malibu, Crunching in towards me and also slamming against the steeringwheel and my two wrists slammed into my windshield--breaking the windshield.

This is a case of: Had I not been wearing my seatbelt, I would have gone through the windshield. Well--the wrists because of hitting the windshield, were so damaged that now--13 years later, I cant draw a line anylonger let alone--barely make writing a letter legable.

Anyway--if I do find any drwawings in the future--ill be more than happy to pass them on to you or whomever wants them.

I forgot to mention that I also did several war drawings.

One of my favorites was of the Vietnam War and showed 2 G.I.'s in their Hootch wearing camo helmet-coverings with Marlboro Reds in the foilage band--and matches. One G.I. was about to press the button to fire a Claymore mine.

Another was of several U.S.Marines during the time of the Boxer Rebellion at the International Litigation Compound in Peking, China.

Then I had a few Wild West type drawings--two of which were of Clint Eastwood as Jonah Hex. A third Western drawing took place in Italy in ww2. A G.I. wearing a Cowboy had was about to have a gun Duel with a German Officer.

I noticed what you wrote up top about kids not doing models these days. I am now freshman in High School and I do a lot of models. And I know a lot of kids that do models also. I mainly do WWII aircraft.

I think some of the model companies have priced theirselves out of business.
I used to buy lots of models and airplane books but now I refuse to pay the prices they want for the same models they sold in the 50's and 60's except the box art is different and the directions are in ten different languages.
The books are too expensive for the quality you get with a few exceptions. If you want a new copy of Jane's All the Worlds Aircraft it would set me back a weeks pay. I have to be content with 4 year old second hand copies.

At least the internet is free for now !

Guess what period I wargame... WW2!!!

I have forces for U.S., Germany, Britain, ANZAC, Dutch, Russians, Partisans with French and Japanese to follow.

Guess I must have around 700-800 figures in 20mm scale and around 200+ vehicles.

I definately agree that model building is a dying hobby. I'm gonna be a Junior in highschool (my brother already posted on here, he's "Timothy S."), and most everyone is playing PS2 or XBox or computer games. Now, we play computer games sometimes, but we both like building aircraft models better and we can't play on the computer all the time, like the way many of our fellow classmates do. But when we do play games, we only, and I mean only, play WW2 games.

The prices are really starting to hurt. We've long since bought just about all the models that you can buy in average hobby shops. What we've turned to is, E-Bay. We've found some really unique aircraft, and the prices we get are really good. We also find ads in the paper for models. Then whenever, we go check out the places, we usually buy lots of stuff. Plus, the sellers usually give us a really good discount, due to the fact that we are highschool students who build models. I've gotten a 1/48 scale B-17 and B-24 that list at $40 and up for less than $15 each.

Man, I don't understand why teens these days don't build models. They really don't know what their missing.

I'm sixteen, and I know a good amount of modellers, true, its not WW2 but its modelling. And Painting. And wargaming. Sadly, yes, its a dying hobby - but look at it this way, in 60 or so years veteran x-box players would be posting their concern on how they believe x-box playing is becoming a dieing hobby.

Oh yes, anyone know a company that does 28mm scale models?
