Mike, that's a really interesting analysis of Burke's influence on US Naval tactics. What little I know of him came from reading Tin Can Sailors. This certainly adds to the knowledge of this innovator. Thanks for finding it and sharing it.

Burke was a genius in destroyer doctrine in the way that Admiral Willis Augustus Lee was with battleships.

i'll take your word for it (didn't read the link.) but these are basically 1-engagement heroes. one with the 31-knot engagement, the other the sinking of the kirishima. i would put capt. gilbert hoover (USS helena, CVL) top in my list of US skippers. he was reprimanded and relieved because of an oversight but before that, he kicked a$$ in at least two engagements with the japanese at night.

Apparently his doctrine and charachter was well enough received for him to become CNO for three terms.
Genius is probably an understatement.

I don't think anyone can object that before Burke, the USN's use of destroyers was less than adequate.

Not quite true. Most of the engagements he was in during the Solomons Campaign were only small skirmishes not worthy of being named as battles. Under his direction DESRON 23 was credited with 1 CL, 9 DD's, 1 sub, and numerous auxiliary ships.
