Suggestion: Warm Welcome Thread
I tried to find a thread all about suggestions for the site, but I couldn't find one.
Anyway, I was thinking that a thread dedicated entirely to the welcoming of newcomers would make a great impression on them. They post that they're new, we give them a hearty pat on the back. Woudn't take much, just a priority thread entitled "Welcome All You New Guys" (or something to that affect)

I salute Ike for his idea and upright thinking. Let's get some more people opening their mouths out of the 700 something "members" and all those soon to come. A test or whatever. I support the idea.

It's thumbs up for welcomes but thumbs down ( for the time being ) for a welcome thread....
Firstly, the thread space is needed for other things. But it's a very good suggestion ; we've discussed the subject of 'welcomes' and decided that the most important welcome of all is actually to acknowledge a new member's first posting ! A new member is sure going to be watching their posting for a reply - they may not know to look at a separate thread for their welcome.
Think about it - I guess most of us are a little self-conscious when we post for the first time & then we're eagerly waiting for the first response. I know I was ! I sat there thinking - what are these guys like ? Are they snobs ? Will they flame me out ?
Or worst of all - will they totally ignore me ??
Otto will keep this one under review - but in the meantime, it looks like we have five or six members who regularly welcome the new guys ; maybe some others can join in....Remember, it's not just the words of welcome that count, we should all be encouraging new recruits to join in the discussions by encouraging and responding to their initial approach.

Some darn scary cat photos in this thread!
Thanks for the suggestions gentlemen, it's a great idea but I'm not sure we need to formalise a process around this. I agree with Martin on this point; when you see a new member with just a few posts, just welcome them, wherever they are.
This does however bring up a good point, we indeed need to have a formal WWII Forum guidelines thread somewhere prominent. I'll put this on the To-do list and post it as a fetured thread in "WWII General" when it's done.

Ach, I was thinking that was going to be a problem. It was worth a try. Erich, that would be a good idea, but they would probably be scared away by his avatar

Do you guys mind asking Friedrich about it before you decide?!
No, it doesn't matter... But Ike is right, my avatar would scare people (I don't know why since Hitler wasn't that ugly! ). I've been wanting to change it, but I don't like the looks of the others...
