Guten Tag!
hello to all here at the forum and I just want to say a few things about myself. first: even though I have been into ww2 since I was very little and reading sgt rock comic books, I have never pursued this passion of mine on the internet so this is my first 'blooding' online regarding this particular interest of mine. I am really focused on nazi germany, weapons of ww2, personalities of the war and the present day ruins of Hitlers Germany and the Berghof which I want to visit someday.
I like Tiger tanks, Panthers, mustang fighters,mp-40 smg's and the thompson and .45 automatic pistol. I collect german artifacts like helmets and the like.
thanks for reading,
regards,
Katrina

well I will answer this question briefly: my dad has been out of my life since I was seventeen. And he hated my obsession with ww2. paricularly the nazis. My fathers father was in the Waffen SS. both of my parents tried to keep this from me as they were ashamed of the fact. I wish I could have talked to this man about his wartime experiences but he wasn't the loquacious type. actually, he wasn't very pleasant at all.

Re: Guten Tag!
don't feel bad K ~
I still have relations in Germany that have been there done that and will not talk at all about the war. One of the biggest probs in opening the door to conversation is "We lost !" and the bitterness still exists while others are quite free to talk of their times no matter how brutal it was

true Erich, its still frustrating to me that this man is lost to us now (died 1992) and so is his legacy and his experiences in the war. as near as I can find out he served in the 5th ss panzer division Wiking as a tank commander with the rank of oberstleutenant. Yes, the 'we lost' sentiment probably kept him from talking about things, he fled to the states after the war and lived a quiet life working for U.S.Rubber which later became Uniroyal as a sales vice president.

Re: Guten Tag!
a Leutenant Colonel eh ? maybe you meant Oberleutnant
in any case yes another window lost. If I could of interviewed let alone met several of my relatives serving in the Heer and Luftwaffe I would of been a happy camper. I have so little on them it is totally frustrating, again too much bitterness of the war for those that are still living

Re: Guten Tag!
Howdy and welcome to the forum. I see you have been pretty busy here with us. I also had a grandfather who was a Spanish volunteer with the Waffen SS. He also emigrated here to the US so it seems we have similar experiences with our kin. Happy posting.

thanks! I figured there must be others out there with parents or grandparents who fought for 'the other side' ...it can upset some people though so I am usually pretty quiet about this aspect of our families past. people hear 'ss' and they think of death camps and the holocaust. there was so much more to the ss though than that.

Re: Guten Tag!
True enough, especially when it comes to foreign volunteers. I just choose discriminately as to whom I reveal the details on the family.
