Hi,

My name is Dan and I'm the Great Grandson of Lieutenant General Frederick E Morgan.
I'm hoping to find more information about him and those he served along side.
I'd also be grateful if anyone could give me some help identifying some of his medals.

Dan

Welcome. How much do you know of your Great Grandfather's service history? Members are always glad to help with medal identification. Can you post photos?

Hi Steve,

I've done a fair bit of research, and questioned my family in great length!
Luckily 'Grumpy' published a couple of books, 'A Soldiers Life', and 'Overture to Overlord', which have obviously been an enormous source of information.

Frederick Morgan served with the Royal Artillery during WW1. During WW2 he was appointed Chief of Staff to the Supreme Allied Commander designate (COSSAC), and was assigned to plan an amphibious assault of France (D-Day).

I've recently come into possession of some of his uniforms and have been trying to identify his ribbons. All the medals were donated to the Imperial War Museum. Hopefully I've managed to attach a photo of his ribbons.
I think the top row from left to right are; Knights Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-1920, WW1 Victory Medal with two mentions in dispatches. Second row; 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45. Third Row (second & third ribbon); Distinguished Service Medal, The Legion of Merit. I'm struggling with the remaining three medals on the third row.

I would be so grateful for any help in providing information. I feel it's imperative that the stories of all these brave men and women and the extraordinary things they went through do not fade into history.

I'd also be grateful for any tips of where else I can source info. I'm really looking for more personal accounts, as his work planning D-Day is quite well documented.

Thanks again,

Dan

P.S I've also included a photo of Frederick Morgan with Eisenhower during the signing of the surrender of Germany at Rheims. (Morgan is second from the left)
