My Dad served in the 37th(Buckeye) Division in the South Pacific during WWII. He was in the 140th Field Artillery in the Fijis as well as Gualdalanal, Bougainville and New Georgia in the Solomons. Luckily, his number came up and he rotated home prior to the Phillipines invasion.

He is still living at age 90, but has forgotten a lot of history. Fortunately, we recently discovered his letters home to his folks and to my Mom, though they were not married at that time. The letters are a treasure of history from a first hand witness, even though there is virtually nothing about where they are or what they are doing, until they move to the next location. My Dad obviously paid attention to the warnings about secrecy. Besides, they would have censored anything he would have written. We plan to talk to Dad about the letters and see what he can fill in for us about Army life.

Hello , welcome to this forum. Those letters are something you could cherish all your life and pass on to your grand children when it's time. In the meantime try to get as much info as possible from your dad, if possible recorded or videotaped. Not only will you have saved his memories , but also he will be able to live on in your memories when it's time for the last call. Convinving his is a matter of patience , a drop of insistance, and timing. Don't hesitate to ask, even if someone says you shouldn't. Remember, it's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't. It's still time , so many veteran children have lost their parents and regret they haven't asked before.
