I posted and then realized I should introduce myself.
I share a healthy obsession with WWII, particularly the Battle of the Bulge/Ardennes Offensive as I have a living connection. My father served with 14th Cavalry Group, 18th Reconn., Troop C, 2nd Platoon which was based in the village of Krewinkel in the Losheim Gap. He saw extensive action in the Bulge.
He is still alive (86) as are others members of the 14th.
Great site to further pursue my quest for information about all theaters in this conflict.

Welcome Wild Rose.Interesting Story, This is a long shot though! Was you're father present at the time when German generals ask for a surrender from the Americans, the Americans replyed by saying NUTS.
Is there any chance that was you're father's unit?

General McAuliffe was the one who is said to have responded "Nuts" to the German surrender demand. He was the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division troops and other units in Bastone. The 14th Cavalry Group was not in Bastone.

Heidi:
JCF beat me to the punch. He is correct...14th Cav. was no where near Bastogne. Closest my dad got was Cherain. However, on the morning of Dec. 16, '44 elements of the German 3d Parachute Division had made it into the lower part of the village of Krewinkel. 2nd Platoon, Troop C held them off. The story is told that as the Germans were pulling back to regroup, one called out "Take ten-we'll be right back!" 2nd's leader First Lt. Kenneth Ferrens replied "We'll be waiting, you son-of-a-bitch!" My dad said he did not hear this as he was 100 yards away from where this apparently happened. Not the historical glitter that the "Nuts" response gathered...but interesting nevertheless.
Thanks JCF.

Oh ok,that's ok,just had a thought and that's all.
That story that you mention German- "Take ten-we'll be right back" 2nd's leader Frist Lt.Kenneth Ferrens replied "We'll be waiting, you son -of-a-bitch!" To me,this story is just as interesting has the NUTS story. Sounds like you're dad would have alot of stories but now i am high jacking you're own thread,so i won't get into it.

Re: New member
Thanks for the responses.
Since I am new, I need some advice. Which forum is most appropriate for sharing stories? I do not want to drone on about "my father did this, my father did that." My intent is not to seek congratulations for what he did. Rather, I would like to share info. about what I have learned in my conversations with him (and his fellow troopers that I have met) over the past 42 years. I am 48 and started this conversation when I was 6. Granted these are personal accounts, but oral histories reveal much.
Thanks for the help.
Tom (Wild Rose)

Re: New member
Tom -- You might want to start a thread in the Battle for Europe section of the forum. If a mod thinks the thread belongs somewhere else, I am sure they will move it for you. I look forward to reading your posts!
Cheers!

Re: New member
Wild Rose,
If you would like to share his personal accounts, you can create a thread in this section of the forum. Or if you prefer, I can create it for you.
Welcome to the forum, we certainly would like to read your father's first-person account of the fighting on the north shoulder of the Bulge. If I can help you in any way, let me know.
