New Member, New Appreciation
Hello Gentlemen!
I have always been fascinated with our American History and in the last decade have come to learn a great deal more from my childhood neighbor of 30+ years. In my lunch time and summer day visits since I have moved he has opened up about the past and his stories from WWII. He spoke freely and I could see the impact it still had on him at 84 years of age.
My friend Vernon S. Nelson passed away 2 months ago and his wife gave me an old case of his that had been closed since his return from the war. It contained pictures, medals, dog tags, news paper clippings, belts, hats, a few letters, watches and other items.
Going through these one by one was extremely moving for me and I appreciate more than ever the service these(you) men gave. I will share the items in more posts, thanks for having me, I cant wait to look around here!
Sam

Re: New Member, New Appreciation
Sam. Welcome. What a beautiful gesture that your friend's wife gave you his treasured memories. How many thousands of boxes lay hid away in thousands of attic only to be discarded. I stopped at a yard sale a couple years ago. There hanging on a pole with other old clothes that were one step from the trash bin was an American WWII class A uniform jacket with a $3.00 dollar tag on it. I checked it out and it was authenic. I asked the young fellow if he really wanted to sell this uniform. He said that the veteran who it belonged to had passed away, and his widow wanted to get rid of it. I will keep it and give it a good home, making sure it serves some form of historical significance and not wind up on a teenager to wear with a pair of hole-ie jeans. Enjoy your stay.

Welcome to the Forum, Sam. It sounds like you may have found a home away from home! For at least the next 6 months you will wonder where time flew as you read through and find yourself going off on tangents to other links of information!! I hope you continue to enjoy yourself here.
