Another relic of WWII found at Castigliani del Lago in Tuscany.

A rather weak-looking pillbox sited to cover Lake Trasimeno ; presumably part of Kesselring's hastily flung-up 'Trasimene Line'.

The lack of battle-damage is explained by the fact that the attack, when it came, approached the town from inland and not across the lake. (The metal object on the roof is a post-war addition for winching pleasure boats ).

As the Official Historians of WWII put it : -

'The great difficulty with the Trasimene Line was that nobody knew where it was, not even the Germans'.

Thanks for the pics, Martin. Nice to see some of the other side's defences.

Looks like they had it pretty good if the cabanas and other park accessories were there back then..

On a serious note: Notice that the construction appears to be CMU's (ie "cinder block" for the layman) rather than poured concrete. A bit weaker construction method for the intended purpose.

yeah TA; British pillboxes were usually built with concrete poured into brick shuttering, and sometimes an extra layer of bricks underneath the loopholes, on the exterior.
We know they were never actually put to the test, but they certainly look more business-like.
