Default Spain/Gibraltar/North Africa

A relative of mine died some years ago and said little of what he did in the war.
He was in the British Army, seconded to MI5/MI6. He apparently was in the international area of North Africa at the start of the war. After the war he could speak a mixed form of Spanish/Portugese, and had learnt a good deal about electronics and unarmed combat.

Anyone got any ideas what he was doing?
