Default Cassino - The Destruction of an Italian Town

Three photos scanned at the NARA on Saturday.

Caption from SC Photo 188926:

"In one of the war's most concentrated air bombings,
the town of Cassino, Italy, was completely destroyed.
German held Cassino has long blocked the Allied advance
toward Rome."

Date: 15 March 1944

Our commanders looked at the struggle the Americans 34th division had when they put two battalions into the town so they looked for a quick fix but all they did was dig a hole for our infantry and your right it was a disaster it was one of the worst things our commanders ever did in the whole war our tanks couldn,t get in so our infantry had to go alone they were cannon fodder crossing the open ground against Mg42 and sniper fire which was coming from 360 degrees and one of the weapons that our guys commented on that caused them so much trouble was the 8cm mortar the germans had the whole town pre registered and could bring down heavy mortar fire quickly and accurately on any part of the town along with that the artillary had a terriable effect because the frontage our guys were fighting on was so small it concentrated the German fire increasing it,s power.

The whole Cassino story was so sad the first three battles were a waste of time and lives piece meal attacks were never going to break the strongest defensive position in Europe.
