I was reading my biography of harold alexander,and found out that 18th army group had approx 800 british,and 1,000 u.s staff officers,when Alex took command from eisenhower.this seems alot to me,or would this be normal?,what do you think?.does anyone know about other army groups?,staff numbers?,etc,etc.cheers.

The numbers varied widely. Depended on how many support formations are attached. At a minimum the AG commander would need a communications battalion of 500+ men. Add in one of the ULTRA liasion/communcations sections, a liasion group from the air forces, a naval liasion section, ect... Then there are other service units like a map making company, extra intellgence units, groups for dealing with the civilians.... The numbers explode quickly, and thats just to operate the HQ itself.
