I do and notice just yesterday that the Post Office has a new one out which is a pic of Cary Grant. I also collect wartime stmaps and have the complete set of Wehrmacht Day stamps, and many many other German and other countries stamps. The collection goes back into the 1920s because I rescued a showbox full of about 1000 stamps from around the world--all sent by my granfather. Some relativly newer stamps include four Medal of Honor Recipients: Audie Leon Murphy, Alvin C. York, and two others. Cary Grant looks as elegant as always.... This posting wasnt meant as a new poll, I accidently his that button by accident but since it is--ill try to make it into a poll. If you collect or like stamps--which kind do you collect? 1) Military related stamps 2) Original ww2 Stamps 3) Historical figure related stamps. 4) ww2 German stamps 5) ww2 American stamps 6) ww2 other 7) I collect only Sports heroes stamps 8) I collect only research heroes stamps 9) I collect stamps with pictures of vehicles only 10) I dont collect stamps at all. I collected stamps when I was really young, but stopped around 12 yrs. old I think. My ma packed them away and I've been wanting to see them again. I really liked space exploration stamps. I kinda have a coin collection. It was litterally rescued from distruction by my ma. I don't know anything about coins though. I wanna sell the collection some day. I did take out all the war era coins for our display.
I don't collect stamps as such - but I have a selection of 'Geburtstag des Fuhrers' envelopes. And I have a lot of WWII commemorative 'First Day Covers' signed by VC recipients, Dambusters, BofB pilots, etc....these are very popular and collectable over here.
Thanks for the replies. I dont actively collect them either but..when I see one that catches the eye--ill buy two of them. I started off with my Grandfathers collection. He has stamps from about 50 countries--most before and during ww2. The majority of them were from China and Germany. The German stamps include several Hitler stamps--with different colors and or poses. I think I have at least one each of Himmler and Goring, and about 200 with swasticas and or soemthing to do with the Third Reich on them. About 2 years ago--I bought a complate Wehrmacht Day--stamp series--and as far as I know--there were only 17 in the series. Each stamp is different in theme. One shows a Uboat commander looking through his periscope (which was Erich Topp who posed for it) another shows a Panzer and aother a Kettenrad, another a motorcycle w/ sidecar, Artillery, Machinegunner, AA gunner, Flak, Eboat, Stukas, Fallschirmjager, Gebirgejagers, adn I think two which shows the Waffen SS in it. I also think there was one for the Rocket-launcher units and smoke troops units as well as Cavalry and either searchlight or signals troops. The rest of my collection isnt interesting as its just bits and pieces of newer releases of personalities.
I dont Collect them but my Dad collects New Zealand stamps. Hes got some from the 1800s and a few expensive ones.
I have stacks of them somewhere in my parents sellar...Used to collect them, but think I's rather trade them for some books right now. I do remember some wartime Dutch stamps that were used for 'spying' purposes....
My dad had quite the collection of old and very rare stamps that he had started collecting back in the 1920's. He had 5 pages just dedicated to Third Reich items. 12 years ago he sold all 35 volumes and the German pages went along with them.....it blew me away as I thought he had reserved those wonderful, clean tidbits for me !!! E
I just collect old Finnish stamps for my fun. Naturally I would not mind if I got some WW2 stamps but at the moment I put my energy in the books on this subject. I got some 500 stamps from different periods and during 1977-1986 I got all the first say envelopes on Finnish stamps. As well my mother visited Russia often and brought many stamps from there. I remember my favourite of all in my youth would have been the Zeppelin stamp from 1930 where the year was put wrong 1830 in some stamps, and some 200 pieces were bought before it was pulled out of sale.Anyway, I think I never could have afforded one... Here´s the stamp with 1930 marking...
I collect anything that finds its way into my hands, but I don't go out and search for anything. I tear the stamps from all my letters for example, and once every blue moon add them to my collection.
Nice stamp collecting stories. I dont know if my collection is worth anything as I dont know what might be rare and what isnt. Anyway--If I passed away before you Erich (which hopefully neither happens for at least another 50 years)--I was going to leave you my Luftwaffe items--but will add the stamps too. You could get my Lw Officers M-43 Cap (Veryfine-nearmint)--Herman Goring Pz Div Enlisted mans Cufftitle--(Mint) Mint Lw Flak Badge and Mint Lw Pilots Badge. Right now--this is worth about 1,500. Not including the stamps.
I'll take it ! but I don;t think we both are ready to leave this planet yet.......my dad and aunt come for the holidays next Truesday, so I will ask him again if and I mean if he has any of those TR stamps still hiding somewhere.......I hope ! E
No problem there. And to be fair--I would also bequeath to you my mint ek1--no makers markings--so you can add about $300.00 to the Lw total. Also my "sis" Will be getting all my Kriegsmarine Items: Mint Uboat Badge, L/19 Ek1, Mint Destroyer Badge, U 181 officers Schiffchen cap, Donald Duck Eagle, Piece to uniform named to Eckardt--(which is embroidered in red silk thread)two I.D. tags--and all the cap tallys (including the one for the Wilhelm Gustloff") and two ribbon bars since they belonged to a man in the German Kaiserlichemarine. Approximate value on this stuff: about $2,000. [ 18. December 2002, 02:39 PM: Message edited by: C.Evans ]
Heh heh heh, I just noticed that when Friedrich gets back here--he will have tons of postings to make--to get back in 2nd place
Carl.......whoa ! have you by chance had your militaria appraised ? might be looking into if you can find some-one cheap, also find a good insurance company just in case ! Yeah I hope he can return after the 1st of the year. hate to say it but if it is that bad he has a hard road in front of him......anyway he has over 100 more posts than me E
No need to--I just compare values with good dealers like Detlev Niemann, P.v.Lucaks, Kai Winkler and Helmut Weitze. I almost completely ignore U.S. Prices--except when it comes to buying a certain item. Already tried to find an insurance company but--nobody wants to insure militaria--that is noone I have contacted. Most likely--ill rent a safety-deposit box at some bank--when I have more money to do so. And on Friedrich still being ahead--which is why by his return--I think you will be ahead for a short while. I think it will keep his fingers busy trying to catch-up He'll have to more than triple his efforts in even thinking he will catch up to mine
I do not collect stamps, but I like how they look like. I loved the one Otto sent me with Lt. Gen. Joseph Stillwell, with Lt. Gen. Jimmy Doolitle in the postcard! Carl, Erich: I am back and that is precisely what I am going to do! Erich, you're dead!
Kai is right! If he could destroy several Soviet Armies in Bijalostok, Minsk, Smoljiensk and Viazhma he surely can help me reaching Carl someday.
