And the railway has restricted the trains to 60 mph as the terrible heat has made the rails go 'soft' and they might buckle

Then in autumn they can't run because there's leaves on the track and in winter it's ice and snow.

British railways, British telecom and the British government - no greater examples of total wankers in control! :wobbling wrist icon: (and grand masters of the rip-off too!)

    To show citizen appreciation

And I thought Britain was cooler, with fog and nice rain...

I know like the weather in Mexico, since it rains twice a day... Always cloudy and not a lot of sun.

Just so you don't get too worried about us Brits.
In Manchester while it was warm, it was also cloudy with some rain. ;)

Congrats my English friends, you now are experiencing what we have had since mid-June and we have had 14 days of over 100 degree F and more to come. The hottest so far has been 114 at my littl abode.

Enjoy ! and I expect all of you to come out like bronze amazons after your summer is through....and the coolness of the fall hits you. Quite remarkable to that you folks have been able to keep records as far back as the 1600's on the temps...

    ~E feeling good at 85 F and my 29th wedding anniversary today......yeah !

As it's so blame hot and not good sleeping weather, I decided to get up and fish around my ashtray for a usable stogie, and watch some TV.

Wow, it's the News and yes, it's now official. Britain hit 101 degrees (38.1 C) yesterday, recorded at Gravesend - S.E. of London, making it the hottest day on record.

To date fires have destroyed 23'000 sq.klm of Europe.

    Shucks, thank you Bush.

What you guys are experiancing is what we call normal--in my part of Texas.

Now what makes it worse is high humidity--do you guys get very high humidity most of the time? Here-it's ALWAYS in the 80% or higher percentage for humidity. Evan when it's cold here--you still sweat. :( :( :(

Today here in CC,TX is 100 F with 92% humidity--heat index probably about 115 F, and we have a breeze directly from the west at 3 miles per hour (when it's blowing)

At least you guys can look forward to much cooler weather months before we can even begin to wish for any here. Our first tiny bit of cooler weather might not come till December.

Humidity. very valid point Carl. I’ve melted in Houston, Texas and Calico, California. Both well over 100 but Calico was bone dry. In Houston, out of the air-conditioning in which respect I believe it’s the world’s most airconed city, I lasted about 20 minutes till I was so saturated I had to go shower and change. In Calico I just felt ‘drained’ and absorbed so much heat I was like a fire-brick radiator all night.

Though I’ve not experienced it, friends in Canada tell me in winter the snow falls in feet or yards overnight. They keep their car’s engine heater plugged in to the mains all the time whether at home or when they get to work or the Supermarket. Forget to do this and the engine freezes solid.

If you live in these environments you’re geared up for it. Britain cannot handle too much heat or too much cold. It’s by no means a regular or guaranteed occurrence and basically it’s not cost effective to prepare, just on the off chance.

Yes knacker, people can have a dip in the pools at Trafalgar square if they want, without much threat of police intervention (if any). Probably most other pools in town. The only warnings getting publicity concern using the river Thames in London. However, once you get towards Hampton Court and beyond, these are traditional bathing stretches.

Kai, I’ve been to Finland a number of times, though never in the real snow season. Flying into Tampere one time was the most amazing sight, with all the lights on while it was still light enough to see the lakes, rivers and land forms. It was like being in a Disney cable-car ride on an unprecedented scale. My only problem with Finland is days that never get dark and nights that never get light. I need a balance dude.

You should try some Mexican cities if you really want to fry your asses!

In the Yucatán penninsula, the capital of the Yucatán State, Mérida can get some 42ºC in the shadow during April and May with some 97% of humidity! (the bloody city is in the middle of the rainforest!)

Or try some of the northern ones, like Saltillo or Mexicali which can reach 45ºC - 51ºC with some 2% of humidity! (Desert!) That's HELL!

Hi Nr 9--I see we have been in the same place a few times.

I was in California back in 1982? or there-abouts and it was hot there in the day time but--at night--I had to wear a winter jacket to keep from freezing while the native there wore bikinis and or no shirts. It's the same way in Arizona except that I don't remember Arizona cooling down very much at night.

In California---we went to Knotts Berry Farms (which is a theme park with rides and all) and I remember I was standing in line before entering the park--and I overheard this lady standing behind me--and she was using a handheld fan to cool herself off--and she said: "It's so hot here im dying." Or something like that. In fact--I remember it was only ONLY about 92 degrees F, and they had maybe about 6% humidity. I did not feel the temperature and did not sweat--no matter how much activity I was involved in.

Needless to say--that lady was pouring sweat and I was bone dry. I kept a laugh to myself when that lady said what she did because--at that time in Kingsville, Texas (where I lived at the time) it was middle of the summer---temps hovering at about 100 or so a day for about 60 days--and high humidity. I had my own lawn care business at that time and for 3 months during the hotter parts of the summer--we had little rain showers about every other day which only made things much much worse.

Had that lady been in Kingsville at that time--she would have died.

Tell you what--I have lived in this all my life--and i'm still not used to it. :(

    Martin,

Wear that sunscreen. Its been a mild summer here you guys stole our heat. Its okay though we've had our fair share of heat waves in the Midwest United States in the past. One in 1995 killed over 500 people in Chicago.

Hopefully the heat isn't that bad there.

Interesting Carl, you say you’re not used to conditions in Texas, yet you must be much better acclimatised than I would be? You say you were in California and found the evening chilly while the natives felt warm. One time in Santa Monica we went to the restaurant at the end of the pier for dinner, and ‘freaked’ the staff by asking to have out food served outside. It was the middle of May and in the high 60’s. To us this was shorts and short sleeve shirt weather. Locals were all eating inside and our waiter asked if we wanted the outdoor heaters turned on?

Freddy I take your word without question. When it come to ‘fried asses’ I bow in the presence of a master! [IMG]

Hi Nr 9, and get this--I STILL sweated when I was in Germany tho I was there fron Sept 16th to Oct 16th. I do admit--there were a few cooler days there--but not like what I was told it was going to be like.

Heh heh--Susanne and I were in Rothenburg o.d.T, near the end of Sept, and the morning started out a bit cool but felt great--we went and walked on the parapet around the entire part of the "old city," and then we went to some restaurant for lunch. By the time we finished lunch and went outside--the temperatures and humidity--were the same as summertime in Texas.

Now when we were in Wilhelmshaven--it was a tad bit cool (not enough to keep from sweating) we checked into our Botel--then decided to visit the Marine Museum which was about 1 1/2 KM away, and it clouded over and wind picked up and got a bit cooler.

When the Museum closed for the day--Susanne and I went to the Esplanade which was across the street and walked down the Boardwalk for about 1 KM then walked back to our Botel. As we were on the walk back--it got very cloudy with dark clouds and the winds picked up and it got to almost feel like winter in Texas. I absolutely lover the German weather--when it got cloudy and cooled down.

In Laboe--at night it got pretty cold as well as in Bonn and Hamburg.

    Eeek!

In Paris it has been so hot that compared to last summer over 50% more people have died of the weather...and so many people sick that it is declared an emergency situation in Paris!

    :(
