Well done to the England cricket team. Its about time we taught the Aussies' how to play. It was a great series, I even managed to get the wife to enjoy it!! The team deserve a [IMG] for effort.

From the number of Union Flags in the crowd, I thought Britain had won the Ashes instead of England.
Oh, I forgot; it's the same thing, isn't it? [IMG]
We appear to be turning the clock back several decades.

Not really Gordon. If you watch an England football match, you still hear God save the Queen being played. If you go to goverment locations in England, you won't see the George Cross, but the Union Flag, and that includes military bases.

Its just takeing a while for many people to be aware of the fact that they are allowed to be English.

*Everyone to their foxholes, British civil war alert!*

The problem with this is not English and Scots killing each other, but the fact that the last time they had a civil war, France became a super-power!

Better polish that tin hat, Freddie! [IMG]
    Bish,
Very few people in Scotland, Ireland or Wales cheer on their national teams-or celebrate their achievements-with Union flags. Only the English seem to be incapable of telling the difference between British & English. No-one ever said they weren't allowed to be English, but if waving the right flag was taken as an IQ test, a hell of a lot of English people would spend their lives in remedial class. The country is called Great Britain....NOT Greater ****ing England.
Government buildings in Scotland also fly both the Union flag AND the St. Andrews Cross. Why wouldn't they-we're British too.
    Cheers Martin!
We must have posted about the same time! [IMG]

Gordon, its not a case of us English not being able to tell the difference, its a case of the examples we are given showing a poor lead. As i said, just look at the Enlish football team standing their to god save the queen. And you go to the barracks of any Scottish or Welsh Infantry regiment, and you will see their national flags hanging from the flag poll. The only place you will see a George Cross in the barracks of an English regiment is hanging room the windows of the lads rooms.

When England finally gets its own offical national anthem, and the English flag is raised officially in England, then that may encourage more people to put down the Union Flag and pick up the George Cross.

I beg to differ; it is a case of the English not being able to differentiate British & English. But that's not new; they've always treated sport as an extension of British foreign policy.
The only sporting event where I haven't heard the national anthem being played is at Scotland rugby matches, because the SRU gave in to the loony brigade a while back and insisted on Flower of Scotland. There wasn't anything wrong with the official one.
I've never seen a military base up here fly anything but the Union flag; it must be peculiar to bases south of the border, but if your attitude is typical of the locals, I can't blame the regiments concerned for trying to annoy you.
I think you'll find they'll have to abolish the United Kingdom first before anyone gets their own national anthem.

Well, it depends if the bases near you are Infantry. If they are not, then they will fly the Union Flag because they are not Scottish.

Not sure what you mean by attitude. I'm not anti scottish or anti welsh, i just wish there was as much pride in being English as the scots or welsh have in being Scottish or Welsh. And i'm hardly one of the locals, living on the biggest garrison in the British army, we have people from all over.

I first noticed the flags when my battalion replaced a Welsh one in Bosnia in 2000. We had a changing of the flags ceromony and while they brought down the welsh flag with their battalion colours, we but put up a Union Flag with ours.

OK, it's time! Aux armes! Long live the King!

Let's invade Belgium and Switzerland first, then northern Italy. Next step would be sweeping everything until the Rhine, as a deffensive position against Austria and Prusia. We'll need the Fleet to steal the American colonies away from Spain and Britain…

When I was at the Alamo a few years ago they had the Geroge Cross flag for all the English who died at the Alamo killing Mexicans. There were a number of them from England and some from Ireland too. There were Mexicans on the Texas side too that I did not know. General der Infanterie "Santa Anna" should teach that in his history classes.

May be that pride is a reaction to the fact that people STILL talk of 'Britain' winning the World Cup in 1966, re-running it on tv at every opportunity, along with England in the last Rugby World Cup...England in the Ashes...England in the last few European Championships...England in the last couple of World Cups...kids summer tv being crap until English schools start their holidays-three weeks after the Scottish ones...etc etc etc.....

Can't say i've ever heard anyone saying it was Britain who won the World Cup in 66, its always England. And surley the fact that that its England winning the Ashes, Rugby World cup and so on should help give us more pride in being English.

But not at the expense of ramming it down the throats of the rest of us who aren't actually interested.
There was a programme on last weekend celebrating 50 years of ITV. The sports section was presented by Angus Deyton, who apparently thinks nothing else has happened except England winning the World Cup, the Ashes, the Rugby World Cup, and Liverpool winning a few cups. No mention of Celtic being the first British team to win the European Cup, or Mary Peters & David Wilkie in the '72 Olympics, or any mention of anything even remotely connected to Wales. Lots there to interest the REST of the UK then........

Obviously nurture rather than nature in his case, Martin.... ;) [IMG]

    Framert,
Forgot to mention that a church in the west end of Edinburgh has a memorial to some local men who were killed with Custer at the Little Big Horn.
