    Delay Dementia by Eating Fish

Maybe the women in my family knew what they were doing when they served us fish every Friday? Because according to recent studies, eating fish can delay dementia.

Alzheimer's disease and other causes of dementia are steadily growing in aging populations around the world. In an effort to combat this, researchers have recently concluded that eating fish at least once a week slows the toll that aging takes on the brain.

Why? The Omega-3 fatty acids that are contained in fish (like my favorite Salmon:) seem to boost brain functioning and protect the brains of the aging participants in the Chicago study.

According to findings in the study, the rate of mental decline in the aging participants was reduced by 10 to 13 percent when they ate one or more meals of fish.

This finding is important because it means that the reduction was the equivalent of being three to four years younger.

Study findings were reported online by the Archives of Neurology and written by Martha Clare of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Next couple of posts: Richard and Gordon thundering that British pupils who refuse to eat fish will be force fed cod liver oil intravenously :D :D

I for myself if given the choice prefer to eat fish, for taste and choloesteol control reasons. I was unaware of the benefits mentioned above. I could kill for salmon [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] :D

Fishy, Fishy, Sushi, Shushi, Arigato! [IMG]

    They will be!

I am becoming a bigger fan of fish, didn't used to like it much as a child because the bones drive me nuts but these days I really enjoy the flavour.

A particular fave of mine has to be salmon, with lashings of lemon juice and pepper on top, grilled until it is just about cooked but the top is crisp. It's gorgeous with rice (again with a touch of lemon) and broccoli.

It seems like regardless of what we eat, there seems to be pros and cons. For fish, the effects of the oil are the pros but the mercury in them is the con. I have read that the benefits out weigh the negative impact of mercury. I can deal with it. I may die tomorrow but I will eat good today! :D

It's the same with everything though, one minute it is good for you the next it is bad. The stupid thing is that at the end of the day the only advice that remains valid is the kind of advice I get from my mother and grandmother, 'eat you're greens, avoid fat and sugar and balance you're diet.'

And if you ask any of these individuals age 90 or above what they eat and they will give a list of foods not on the healthy list. Bacon always shows up. You won't see Tofu on that list.

Yeah, but as a rule you'll find they got a balanced diet, meat, veg and so on. Generally good, traditional food rather than junk.

Now I agree with that. All those preservatives will do you no good. I try to stay away from anything already prepared and aim for fresh veggies and meats. Tastes better anyway

The secret there is varied diet. Bacon ok, but if it is only part of a wide ranged diet containing high fiber and other colestherol soaking stuff that will get the baddies quickly through your gut on the way out. Veggies, whole bread, fruit, müesli, etc.

Old Geezer 1 - I have a terrible time trying to pee, half an hour just to release my muscles.

Old Geezer 2 - That's nothing. I have immense difficulty in having any bowel movement, it's ages every time I have to go to the toilet, I'm completely blocked inside.

Old Geezer 3 - I guess I'm lucky then. I have no trouble at all with urinating and evacuating, as a matter of fact every morning at around 6am I have this terrific bowel movement.

Old Geezers 1&2 - Say, you're truly lucky then!

Old Geezer 3 - I'm not decided on that yet, my problem is I wake up at 8am!

Well, eating healty is sometihng. But your genetic properties also affect your healt. So if you are from the "superior race" you might do well even if you don't eat healty.

Something about a diet people call the "French paradox". I am always amazed when I visit veterans in France who still eat and drink the way they used to when they were 20. YET, they know what they are doing and they are well over their eighties now. It is true that they eat vegetables, fish, soup etc.. but they also drink wine and hard liquor and can spend an entire day eating without getting fat. Many have no cholesterol either and they could probably teach to many young people how to party...
