A very dark and sad period in U.S. history...... Always found it bizzare how the U.S. criticises other countries for living when she herself is far from squeaky clean.

Not so much countries but the dark side of mankind. Each country has had it's dark history and unfortunately I feel the US is sliding towards a different kind of oblivion. I hope to be in Italy or Ireland when that happens.

That was a very sad part of the past. I wonder what world opinion might be though, if they had cameras and photographs from the Middleages or better yet, from the time the Caesars ruled most of that world? Seeing Vlad the Impalers victims strung up for miles around showing a pointed pold shoved through a persons anus and sometimes continuing through that persons chest. Better yet, all the "Spartacus" slaves that were captured-Crucified by the Romans. Don't get me started on what the Japanese di to the Chinese in Nanking, among many other places.

I have seen many pictures like these before on other sites and in books, and those pictures come from all over Europe and Asia and in Central and South America.

During my time Researching some 18,650++ artifacts for the local Museum of Science and History, I have had the displeasure of finding several websites filled with the same material as in this one. Some sites I had to access due to researching artifacts were most definately sickening racist sites as well as sites in Mexico, Russia, The Middle East, Africa, Australia, Ireland, Bolivia and in the USA etc. I found that no country is ammune to having similar pasts.

Not that I could ever condone anything shown in that website, one thing that has to be remembered about what was posted in that website on the lynchings is that what happened at that time, was common and was how the majority of people thought. Still very disgusting though.

    Atrocities...

As Chocapic stated, the older the history, the longer the list.

As Marienberg stated, do we really have to go through the whole list?

There is no time limit or expiration date, so those without sin, plaese hurl that stone.
    Prepare for a counter strike.
    Weapons free.

Atrocities, the more the word is used (for anything & everything) (for the big "Sale"), the "cheaper" it becomes. An Entomoligist would call stepping on a bug an atrocitiy.
Heck tomorrow, after we've become immune to the "Shock & Awe" of the word, we might find a breakfast cereal named Cinnamon Toasted Atrocities.

The issue here isn't about how old the history is or whether it is an atrocity or whether it is any worse than other countries, but the fact that it occurred in a country that spent most of the twentieth century claiming a moral superiority over others whilst allowing these activities.

SW says "so those without sin, plaese hurl that stone" - well, the same could be said in reverse. Lynchings were still occuring in the 1950s and 60s whilst the USA was fighting the war against "repressive communism". It was selling the American Dream whilst blacks were in fear of their lives.

And it was forcing the Germans and Japanese to apologise for their behaviour but did not itself formally apologise for it's behaviour and lack of action until 2005.

So whilst I agree that other countries have behaved far worse, the US is not whiter than white (no pun intended) and so cannot act as a moral crusader.

And as I have said in my earlier post, these are not historical events - lynchings have occured very recently.

    Amrit,
IT WAS DECADES AGO! What Za has posted, showing b/w photos of blacks being lynched in America on that scale, happened DECADES AGO.
So what is the point of all of this anyway?
That political correctness dictates that only whites commit hate crimes in America?

If so, I believe these people's families would disagree:

You may have to search a little further than the media bias of CNN, NPR and your own BBC to find the truth but, I promise you, it's out there.

So was WW2 but we still study that, and we acknowledge that THAT had an effect on the people who experienced it, their faimilies, their descendents, and the countries where the events occurred.

So, in context to a time-span, there is no difference at all - so don't give me all this guff about it being ancient history and that we should we forgive and forget. If we can still get angry at the treatment of the Jews or the Chinese or any other minority by the Axis powers, then we have every right to just as angry at the treatment of blacks in the USA because IT WAS HAPPENING AT THE SAME TIME!!

Just don't forget while your bleeding heart is off ranting and raving about the treatment of blacks in America that that is only half the truth told by the biased left wing media in this country.

What? You mean they were only half-lynched?

Two people separated by a common language.....

By stating "half the truth" I am implying that while the media, NAACP, ACLU and other groups, that have media preference, are off trying to paint the white person in general as a sadistic, evil, hate-monger; when the shoe is on the other foot, I.e., whites have had violence dealt them by blacks (or others) then these accounts recieve little to no coverage because they are not deemed politically correct. Verstehen?

Oh, I "Verstehen" very well, thank you.

But what I don't understand is the whining tone. These events occurred. And they occurred purely because of racial prejudice. Black individuals were killed in front white crowds, often in front of whole communities - photographs were taken as souvenirs (which is what most of those photographs inthe above link are) and in most cases, no criminal charges were brought. In the few cases where the law intervened, the killers escaped justice.

Now you show me an example of this happening in reverse - where a white person was lynched in front of a black crowd, with the whole black community watching and souvenirs photographs of the white person hanging from the tree were circulated.

Just imagine the indignationthat would ripple through American society - as it did when those contractors were killed and displayed in Iraq.

The fact that, what you call the politically-correct, media and organisations, have deemed to portray these individuals as victims, is both appropriate and right.

And if a white person is the victim of a crime, just as many right wing media outlets and organisations are ready to jump on the band-wagon and portray all black people as criminals.

First off, there is no "whining tone" in my speech. Only you percieve it to be so. Yes, these events occured. No doubt in that. Blacks were lynched in front of white crowds and there is no evidence that the opposite was done. And that goes back to my previous post: That there has not been a repeat of such a happening (black lynchings witnessed by crowds of white people) in the last 4+ decades. Additionally, any and all organizations that portray these people as victims are absolutly right; however, more often than not those organizations, that I mentioned, fuel a backlash of hatred and violence toward whites that goes well beyond what should be the intended role of reporting and race related education. Further, the "political correctness" that stems from such groups is that only whites can inflict race crimes against other peoples and can not have the same done to them. Sadly, the mainstream media buys into this nonsense and tells whites that they should feel a sense of guilt. This brings many social indignities upon American culture such as affirmative action, preferential treatment and socialized healthcare/welfare. Lastly, no right wing media outlet in this country has attempted to portray blacks as outright "criminals" when hate crimes against whites have been inflicted.

Amrit, like it or not, Wilconqr speaks the truth. What he said and has shown, is exactly what is happening in out country these days. The stupid fragging politicians are mostly stupid self-serving assholes who in turn; only service their friends and relatives.

At any rate Amrit, I feel that all your doing in your arguments is "jumping-on-the-bandwagon" because these days, it is fashionable to America-bash. I am highly surprised that you had not said anything against Britain and Germany for that matter.

I am going to suppose that since Wilconqr posting what he did and me saying what I did, now makes both of us black-hating racists because we speak the truth?

One thing you do not know about me is that I have friends who are Black, Hispanic, Indian and Asian. I have dated not only Caucasion ladies but a few Senoritas as well. I love em all. ;-D All this aside, and being one who lives in the midst of many coultures, I myself, have absolutely ZERO probles with anyone; based on ethnic origin. My roommate is half Hispanic, and half Russian. I am one of only two people in my apartment building who is white - the rest are hispanic. I don't have a problem with that and are not one to move to another location either. And besides, my nextdoor neighbor cooks up some mean beef and chicken Fajitas ;-D

I know I got off point here but, now you know a bit about me and maybe can make a judgement?

And YES, I admit I can't spell worth a crap for some reason today.

C.Evans, I did not call you or anybody else here a racist. What I said was that

I am quite happy to discuss the situation in Britain and Germany. We have a similar situation with the the right wing media twisting stories to suit their agendas, the Daily Mail being the worst. Even though there are no absolute truths, there are facts that are often manipulated to fit a political agenda, often to the detriment of the subjects. Immigrants, ethnic minorities, and other people who are different from the "majority" become the scapegoats for societal ills.

As this thread started with a posting on lynchings in America, i have argued that these events are both relevant to todays American society, and to the way that America is perceived in the world. In return the counter arguements have concentrated on the fact that they "ancient" history and that whites are equal victims. We can certainly debate the issues that whites face in contemporary American society but they are not directly comparable with the issue at hand - the killings of a members of a ethnic group purely because of their race.

It is commendable that you are able to live in a multicultural community and have friends from within them. And I am not America-bashing. That sort of arguement does not wash with me. It is no more commendable than if I was accused of being anti-semitic if I start debating Israel.

Always makes me cringe when people look at the evil deeds of their forefathers and say 'it was all in the past.' Reminds me of the holocaust apologist who always resorts to the 'but it happened 60 years ago, get over it.'

Im afraid Stefan, that America, has issues in trying to deal with its past.

It is reflected in its war in Iraq.
