The New Seven Wonders of the World is a proposed alternative to the Seven Wonders of the World, organized by a Swiss corporation called New Open World Corporation (NOWC). The final list was announced on July 7, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal, in the Estádio da Luz, SL Benfica's stadium at 9:30pm (local time). Voting closed on July 6, 2007. Next in the company's series is the " New7Wonders of Nature ", nominations possible until August 8, 2008.

The whole thing was silly and illustrative of what our world has sunk to. Simply pandering to the public. "YOU will decide what the new seven wonders will be". The average person is dumb as bricks and any old yahoo could vote (multiple times) for whatever spot struck their fancy, usually whatever location was from their home country. The entire thing will be forgotten within a year. That's our new world where a news cycle is 24 hours at best.

There were 7 wonders of the ancient world, which composed the eastern mediterranean and Near East. The world now is much larger and to claim that there are only 7 wonders in the world is nonsense. Even worse is to suggest that the decision of what constitutes those wonders should be made by an open vote is an insult to not only my intelligence but all the ancient (and modern) peoples who made those wondrous sites.

Well, who decided on the original 7? Herodotus by himself?

Another step into the abyss. I also think this election was pathetic. Even Unesco boycotted the so called event. Another tele (internet) reality show..... Maybe I should add my garden shed on the next list?

Quite frankly I found the event completely idiotic. But in any case the reigning Seven Wonders really are The Seven Wonders of the World Known to Greeks ;) Strabo or Pausanias or Ptolemy, whoever it was, had never heard of the Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat or Tenochtitlan.

    Or Wal-Mart or Skipper's garden shed, then.:p

I'm surprised at the lack of reaction over Skipper's purported "garden shed" :D

That's because I didn't see the post until today Za. That's not my shed, that's world wonder number two!!! My shed is somewhat bigger (13m2) , it looks more like a scandinavian cabin. In fact it's imported from Belgium. I kind of like the bog shed though, I could use one of these.

Oh non, you really didn't. I saw the results on TV and people screaming like they won some kind of World Cup, a collective hystery . In fact winning means more tourists= money. Sad isn't it?
