USA won World War Two and saved England ?

It's all a matter of greyish shadows. It's is true that without the U.S the UK would have been in trouble . Also the U.S did a tremendous job int he Pacific. It is also true that the UK resisted remarkably well in 1940 (and after) . Also the backbone of the 3rd Reich was broken by the Soviets (stalingrad, etc..). Let us not forget the Commonwealth contribution, for example the Canadians at Dieppe, the Newzealanders at Monte Cassino etc.. Also the French 1940 contribution is not neglectable : without their massive shooting down of Luftwaffe aircrafts in 1940 , the Raf would have had to face over 2000 extra aircrafts during the B.O.B. not to mention that without the sacrifice of the French garrisson at Lille there would have been no Operation Dynamo...(both factors made Seelöwe impossible) .Let's also mention the Free French (North Africa, Anvil , Italy etc..) the Free Poles (Arnhem) the Free Dutch (D-Day) , the Russian and Polish partisans , the Resistance , the SOE and all those who contributed even in a modest way. It is the GLOBAL contribution of all allied nations which made V.E. possible and not the "my country is better than yours pub debate". Of course some countries were more powerful than others, but the courage of a Luxemburger and a Norwegian at D-Day was just as good as those from the other nations . I salute them all , and that includes the Veterans of both sides (except war Criminals) because they all lived Hell .

I was on page 10 when I wrote the above. Someone adressed part of my reply on the next page. (i.e. there are indications that the US was undermining the empire)...

I really speak as a neophite. It just seems to me that in 11 pages the discussion has been about poor isolated UK vs the big bad wolf and the big strong American cavalry swooping in to save the day.

The best analogy I can think of was the airborn at Bastogne. Patton swooping in to save them. The airborn troops, besieged and sufering as they were, have always denied they needed "saving". They were holding their own.

It all depends on your point of view, neh?

 

Yes and lets not forget...Without Monty saving the day in Ardennes....lets not forget The English...think some were British too..rode in and saved the USA in Ardennes..thus allowing pearly pistols to releive Bastoigne...Am I right or am I right...

Oh course we Americans saved England, Highclere Castle, the Mendips, chedar cheese, hedgehogs, Monty Python and the English language so they owe us big time. For my part I will settle for a nice mews flat in Mayfair, furnished well if you please and a Lotus Evora to explore the byroads and when feeling nostalgic A Morgan Brookslands 3 wheeler, in BRG and by old Barbour Beaufort is getting a bit taddy, some elbow patches please and a pair of Boss 20 gauges, I am old and frail.

Of course that won't make us even but a good start, we Yanks are noted for our subtlety, good taste and manners, but the Evora will allow me to look for a nice farm, near Lower Slaughter will be fine.

Modest and humble , that's us! ......A restored Hurricane would be nice....ummmm, that farm will need a grass strip, and a hanger, and a modest control tower, and a cottage, Cotswold stone and thatched, with a stream, fishing rights and bridge as well. A few sheep too, urgh is an old socialist , he will not mind sharing his and lastly, for the time being, just a wee pack of fox hounds.

Now are not you Brits glad we saved you....who better??? Oh, and a date with Emily Blunt.
