So my great grand Father brought this over with him from Sicily when he decided to come to America. Though for ages I've wondered what it was and which rifle it was affixed to. Pictures below. The side view of bayonet and sheath: View up the handle to the hilt and mounting points: Serial number and production date on the side (highlighted in red): If I knew what this was, it would make my father and grand mother very happy, so thank you guys in advance. I'm usually very knowledgable about weaponry, just not so much pre-cold war bayonets.
the only others bayonets i have ever seen like this one were .pre. 1916 with the gruve's . in it like this one the french.british.& germans came to an agreement not to use them as to what rifle it goes with . not shore but some old hands on the forum will nodout know the answer cheers krieg
my guess would be early british ..but don't really know sorry cheers krieg ps.. will see another fellow i know
This is what I found. Your picks a bit fuzzy so I can't tell if the handle matches but the Blade and sheath look awfully close. This pic is a German Model 1916 Erzats Sawback.
The picture doesn't want to load correctly. Though the date on the blade, 1938 couldn't come out of a 1916 patent bayonet. Seems odd, though they look almost spot on.
a fellow has got back to me with his thorts on this bayonet he says it very much looks like .. pre 1917.german bayonet i hope this helps.. he is still looking into it cheers krieg
In the book World Bayonets 1800 to present by Anthony Carter .Bayonet # 178 looks the most like it .Switzerland - Model 1914 Schmit-Rubin Engineers Bayonet. Hope this helps (papabyrd)
papabyrd you could right there this info has just came threw to me great stuff there mate cheers krieg
hey antiria? are you sure it was Italy? My great grandfather brought back a bayonet too that looks just like that.....except it was japanese...ill post the pics, but i dont think you could find japanese relics in italy no?
Wow, you found it! I counted the notches on the blade in a picture, and the one in my hand and it matches with 33 notches. This is so cool, thank you guys.
