Looks Japanese as does the gent to the left however the RAF roundels would place it post war. Doesn't really look like a Zero so I'm guessing maybe a Nakajima, maybe a Ki-43.

The roundels are not RAF, they are French. It is one of nine Ki-43 IIIs(either a/c #7698 or #7713) flown by the French Groupe de Chasse 1/7 in French Indochina.

    You fellows are all correct.

    Ki-43.

Sorry I was long in responding

    Looks like Bill was first.

    Tee it up.

    Edit:

Takao is correct. Flown by French in Indochina until they stopped working

Alright, alright. You gentlemen have forced my hand.

    Wgsvr,
Your photo is a very interesting one. It is the very first TS-1(Turret Scout) BuNo A6300. She is carried aboard the Clemson class destroyer USS Charles Ausburn(DD-294) during a 1923 USN experiment regarding the usefulness of carrying floatplanes on small warships. The experiment was for the most part a failure, but the USN would later revisit the matter in 1940 when the USS Noa(DD-343) was fitted with a floatplane, and finally during World War II when a few Fletcher class destroyers were fitted with catapults.

    Fred Wilson,
The aircraft is too unique to be a tuffie, she is the only Blackburn B20 produced.

Probably would have been harder if you had used a photo with the lower hull in it's retracted position.

That it is, Takao. Probably the first USN attempt to build an "affordable" fighter. Curtiss built them to NAF plans. As you say, not too successful off the Langley, even less off the Ausburn as they had to stop, set the plane on the water and then go on their way. Your inning.

You nailed Three letters in the alphabet. Try again.

Hint, It obviously never got into production. Serious idea for a serious reason: it had to be able to bomb from 40,000'

One of the wars most famous achievements was virtually wasted because of the lack of this aircraft or any equivalent.

    Specs:
    Span (ft.in/m): 172.1/52.5
    Length (ft.in/m): 100.8/30.7
    Wing area (ft2/m2): 2676/248.9
    Max Weight (lb/kg): 113,500/51,484
    Engines: 6x Merlin 60
    Max speed (mph/kmh) at height (ft/m): 360/579 at 40,000/12,192
Armament: 32,000 lb of bombs, 2x 0.5" MGs
