For starters the German soldier had to swear an oath of personal fidelity to the Führer... Besides the top of the chain of command was Hitler himself, so each soldier, sailor, airman and Waffen SS fought for the Führer.

Just watched All Quiet on the Western Front again. The newer version in color with Ernest Borgnine & Richard Thomas. Seemed fitting/timely.
What a waste and slaughter because politicians wanted to snub one another because their wallets were not big enough, and their ego's were too big.
I didn't recall seeing any of them in the mud, blood, rats & poison gas.
This show will always be an eye opener as to the reality, as compared to the glory of war.
If you want to fight in a war ... watch the show, and pick the starving, freezing, terrified one, who fights daily for the same 100 yards, for years on end, that you want to be.

I wanted to chime in here. I am a combat veteran. I won't say where or when. That doesn't matter. My father was a navigator on B-17Gs in WW2. He had trouble with his left arm from frostbite when their heater or something got shot to pieces from a cannon shell from a fighter. He knows that is what it was because it also blew apart the co-pilot. I don't understand the layout of B-17s, but that is what he said.
WW2 was a very different war. My parents spoke of it often to me. And while going to war, seeing war, being shot at, sh*t, being SHOT are all sick stupid vile things worthy of being puked on by all of humanity for their true perversion of how things should be -- WW2 was a VERY different war.
I do NOT condone war. I do study it, in my little spare time and with as much energy as I can spare these days. Decisions in the congress are ratified on the battlefield, as one writer once said (sorry, probably mangled that quote).
But back to WW2. Watch the movies of the era. Amazing propaganda -- They either spoke to how much FUN war was (Stage Door Canteen, Hollywood Canteen) or Look at our valiant soldiers triumphing in the face of adversity (Sahara, Casablanca for Gossakes!).
Another great reason to romanticize WW2, and that is what is going on here...a romance with WW2, is that we had a clear consensus as a nation. You would be very hard pressed to find someone in any major city in this country actively openly supporting Japan, Italy, or Germany. We were focused, directed, driven, and positive we would win because GOD was on our side (wait, Gott mit uns? Doesn't that get confusing?). Look, all I am saying is that, on the surface, the war was a better war to fight than the war in Iraq or Afghanistan. War is War and all of them suck.
I am sorry if this was rambling or incoherent. There are quite a few emotions pretty close to the surface for me to write from a safe distance.
Someone posted "Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori" earlier. There is one I sort of prefer only for its brevity. Sorry if it offends any vets out there. My dad taught me the poem early in my life.

I just want to say one more thing about my Dad. Before the war, he was very interested in electronics and even submitted some inventions to RCA as a consultant and had patents in his name. After the war, though, and what he saw, well, he told me that he was very changed. He went to medical school. He went into the VA system and was the man most responsible for developing the treatment for returning POWs -- spcificially those who were on the Bataan Death March. If you are from around Pittsburgh and a vet, there is a very good chance you met my Dad. We had our issues, as all sons and dads do, I think, but we loved each other and I miss him.

Don't go to war. Go to peace.

 

I agree a 100%. There is a great chance to get killed any theatre of the war.
