I'm a little weirded out. My friend of 20 years passed away a few years ago. He was a WWII vet and served in the Navy for 1 year in 1942.

The problem I have is that I was going through a bunch of his old photos and found a couple picture negatives of him in Nazi garb and in one he's standing in front of a swastika banner, hailing. I was thinking maybe he dressed up for Halloween or maybe it was a joke but I'm not quite sure what to think.

I've developed the negatives and can here's a link to the photos.

You might want to do some research into that. Pictures can say a thousand words but the one word they do not mention may be the true answer.

This seems IIRC to be a similar story to one either posted here before or on another site.

I'm more than a little suspicious of the one where he has on a tie with a pattern, that would be a no-no.

On the first pic his shirt-collar is tucke inside his neck... the shirt looks like civillian pattern.

On the second pic, as Clint said, the tie has a pattern; the pseudo-fourragère is no fourragère at all and there is no épaulette to hang it from.

    Nice curtain braid hanging, though.

To me this does not even reach the suspicious stage ;)

    Think about it.

He served in the navy (US, not kriegsmarine, ja?).

Perhaps he, like my Uncle Karl, was a Bund member at one time or another during the war.

Whatever, he sure as heck wasn't the real deal.

    That moustache...priceless.

Just one more crazy wannabe Hitler.

    Like this guy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpTpVzsjd8E

I have a picture made of me several years ago while I was shaving off my mustache. I left it as a schnicklegruber, put on a khaki shirt and plastered my hair down in a part a la Hitler. I then effected a scowl and snapped my arm up in a Nazi salute, whereupon my wife took several pictures, with one or two with my arms crossed. The photos are still lurking about the house and could be indicting by those who do not know me.

I would find out more about him.

I'm no expert, but several things stand out:

The collar thing-Za is 100% right (also, the braid)

    The tie-doesn't look right

The Hitler look. Even though imitation is a high form of flattery, I don't think imitating the Fuhrer would've been tolerated.

I don't want to dishonor your friend, but you would do him a tremendous favor by burning those pics.

I think (or at least suspect) that these faux photos were posted just to see if they could get a "rise" out of us. Wrong tie, wrong collars, wrong belt buckle, wrong breeches, wrong fourragère. Just some wannabe faking up a faux uniform for kicks and giggles.

BTW, the Bund uniform was a gray shirt and a black tie and pants.

The "Sam Browne" belt isn't right either. The over the shoulder strap looks more like a regular belt draped across his body and does not match the waist belt that looks to me to be a canvas belt. Overall, the whole outfit looks thrown together, like possibly he a had or found a Nazi flag and decided to have some fun with it.

There were no other pics, such as groups of similarly dressed people, parades, rallies and the such?

It looks like a lark to me.
