Well, for one, we don't have a bunch of "councils' or whatever you call them telling us how to live our lives in the minutest detail.

The incessant moaning of our press is no indication of any sort of actuality.
I'd bet whinging about Local Politics is whinging about Local Politics, no matter where in the world... we just often enjoy moaning about it more than some, kind of a national trait ;).

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Most people would have realized long ago that their advice was neither welcome nor appreciated, and was, in fact, perceived simply as a "dig".

Humor? Is that what you call it? I don't think your are the least bit funny, so spare me the "humor".

As for "freedom", I think we here in America have far more control over our own lives than anyone in any of the EU provinces (if that's what you call them). You can make all the jokes you want, but the US government, for all it's subtlety, still keeps in mind that it's dealing with armed citizens, not subjects, and knows that if push comes to shove, it's options are limited.

If you want to espouse gun control in Britain, by all means, have at it, but don't preach to us on the subject.

The man has a good point. It's going to be hard to sell that myth of "white oppression" when the man in the Oval Office is Black. Doesn't mean it won't be tried, but I note that the voters in Nebraska have now officially made Affirmative Action illegal, and the trend is growing in other states.

BTW, you also misspelled the President-elect's first name; it's Barack....as in President Barack Hussein Obama, LOL!

A byzantine subject Jeff, but being somewhat 'territorially challenged' compared to the US's scale I suspect the definition of 'the countryside' would have to be rather different. We don't really have so many wide open spaces beyond arrow-shot of some sort of civilisation.
We also don't have the same definition of 'city' really; There are City, County, Town, and even Parish councils - each of them usually your average collection of parochial politicos. (Thinking about it 'parochialism' is etymologically related to 'Parish'... this is often quite fitting ;))
I'm sure you have equivalents that keep the parks looking nice, organise the rubbish collection and deal with local 'civicness' etc. ?

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Well, not really. In my state, if you do not live an incorporated town or city, then you really have very little government affecting your day to day life. The "local" government consists of the county and the counties do little more than provide law enforcement (sparse) and road maintenance. The counties are the local arm of the state government and have very little power as they technically work for the legislature and the Governor and those two organizations don't like to share power with the people downstream.

The county negotiates contracts for trash pickup, but it ends up with us dealing directly with the company if we have problems, which I prefer. There are no building codes, no ordinances affecting the appearance of your home and land, no noise ordinances (there is no noise here, except circadias in the late spring) and no one telling us how to live our life. We have a county commissioner (one of five in the county), who is elected by direct vote, but his main concern is road maintenance and construction. He hasn't the power to come by and tell me to mow my yard, the icy looks from my neighbors would take care of that.

You see why we get indiginant when the federals sweep in and try to tell us that our land is now a "wetland" and if we walk on it, we will endanger the Purple-breasted Snot Locker or the Three-toed, Toad Eating Newt.

Distance to civilization? We have a store about 2 miles away and the nearest town is 9 miles away. It can take the deputy sheriff 30 minutes to get here. See why we are armed? Oh yeah, there is the State Troopers, the law enforcement arm of the state. I think there are about 2 on duty any one time in the county. They mainly deal with traffic and traffic wrecks.

    The Purple-Breasted Snot-Locker?
    Heard of a Tri-folded, paisley-printed, pants-pressed, booger-vault
    I usually carry one :D
We pay the "Outfit" to pick up the trash and take it to another city. Then they pay their "outfit" to bring it back here.
They're Union, with a solid contract and political connections (nepotism), so what can you do except give them a Christmas "bonus" for showing up at all.

I am sorry if you Americans seem to be getting a little defensive on the Macdonalds comment, that was only a joke and not meant to be taken to heart, and apologize for the remark.

I personally, have no problem with Macdonalds, I love their cheeseburgers, but I never go over the top with them. However many Australians tend to like the odd MacDonalds, or to be more specific, they love it and insist on eating it every night.

Also I have no problem with Americans, Americans Idea's or inventions, they have given this world a great many things, and just like the rest of the world including Australia have much to learn from each other. I was in no way putting the Americans down and apologize again for any who were mislead.

I'll act the same as you're wife did when or if i ever do fire a pistol, which i would love to one time in my life.
The only time i seen a pistol up close when a cop was inches away from me and i had a glance at it, it looked huge for a pistol. Didn't realized how big they were.
we do have guns in Australia, most owned by Police officers and security i think, and of cause The Australian Army and the underground. Very rearly an citizen owns or gets there hands on one.

Actually, the plundering was done by the French soldiers, our gripe with the English (that's what we called the Poms back then) is that with the surrender agreement (Convention of Sintra), the Froggies were allowed to carry themselves and their appurtenances plus everything they had looted in His Majesty's ships, courtesy of Sir Hew Dalrymple (spit, spit)!

    I know, I was there.

Then I'd appreciate if you would kindly drink a lot more :D

Guns in USA are as much a cultural question, than a legal/social/criminal question.

Talking about non hunting guns like military / police handguns here.

So many people in US are very pro gun in the name of freedom, and they don't care about their government tracing their communications with no independant judicial oversight worth mentioning.

Like if there's a presumption you're a law abiding citizen when you go buy a gun, and you are a presumed criminal each time you go online :D

To each country its own culture, I guess.

Althought very young, USA's culture is not better nor worse than any other, and if Obama intends to change USA culture, it will be a well deserved failure.

Actually, in the years that followed (before the royal family returned from Brazil) of British occupation, they did their fair share of plundering and robbing. But, as you're from Lisbon, I'll forgive you this one :D

(This is a joke really no need for anyone to find it offensive!)

Don't worry Miguel, unlike some we have a reasonable national ability to laugh at ourselves over many things ;).
Though I think you'll actually find all that so called 'plundering' qualifies as 'legitimate business transactions' by the Imperial standards of the day :D.

    Well said Adam!

Skunk, clearly the babylon 5 chap was having trouble with his universal translator or whatever their equivilant was:

    Dubious:
    –adjective
    1. doubtful; marked by or occasioning doubt: a dubious reply.
    2. of doubtful quality or propriety; questionable: a dubious compliment; a dubious transaction.
    3. of uncertain outcome: in dubious battle.
    4. wavering or hesitating in opinion; inclined to doubt.

I.E. I am unsure of my opinion of it, I feel it may be questionable, it may be of doubtful quality, the comment causes me to have doubt. It seems out of place in the article, whilst most of it makes sense, where did this little tidbit come from?

I was referring to the missing 'c', but I was simply posting on an internet forum late one evening, not trying to be taken seriously as a political commentator;) DA, you might want to take note of that as well.

Well you do like to fly in the face of public opinion ;)

Anyhow, you perceive everything as a dig so I'm not likely to get upset am I. Let's call it quits.

Heard of the patriot act? They managed to sneak that by all your armed citizens didn't they! Seriously, have you ever considered that the fact you can sit by a door clutching a rifle might have distracted you from the fact that your freedoms are being whittled away in the name of 'security?'

Either way, your ignorance of the way of things over here seems to be as complete as the ignorance you claim we have of the state of affairs in the US. You still have yet to provide a realistic indication of what you are free to do that I am not.

Who is preaching to you on the subject? All that has happened is that people have asked questions and tried to learn more about the situation. I certainly haven't criticised it.

Ahh, well, that's not our fault. You should have worked harder to keep them ;)

I'm *hic* doing my *hic* best!

    Dubious is a cop-out.
Plastic, phony, generic, vague, juvenile, scared, cheap, wishy-washy, evasive, smoke-screen, canned, toxic, catch-all dribble used by those with no credible argument, and nothing to commit to except a difference of opinion.
Almost everyone (except you) knows this.
Name a document (of lasting importance) where that "Rubbish" word is used?
    Try the "Tabloids" :D:p
Say what you mean, instead of hiding behind many possibilities, your Country(men), or Nanny's skirt, or no one can be expected to/should believe what you say is coming from you ... or just programed Propaganda.

    You must be joking!
Do you arm yourselves to fight your own government in case it threathens your freedom?
If the US of A is a democracy, why do you elect a government that will limit your freedom?
And if, against all odds, such a government ever will move into office, do you really think that a rag tag bunch of civilians armed with hand guns could stop it in case it wants to enforce gun control upon you or violate your Bill of Rights?

The first thing you will face is your own US Army and the US Air Force, because they would be loyal to the President and obey his orders.

You will be mowed down by the numbers before you ever reach to reload you guns.

It won’t protect you from an outside enemy either, as you learned the hard way at 9/11

    That part amazes me.
Maybe so, maybe not, but at least I will go down fighting, not stripped naked, hearded into a pit, and shot in the back of the head.

Each state's National Guard is not beholding to the President, except when they are Federalized. My neighbors are the Guard and they think along my lines. It is still a guess who they would support. As is evidenced many times in the past, the soldiers don't always follow the leaders.

That is the job of the Federal government, my job is to protect home and hearth.

Sorry, but you must be the one who is joking. Before WW2 Germany used to elect there own leaders. What happened there. At one time Iraq used to hold elections, Untill Saddam. People in power, will always seek more power. I don't think that DA mentioned that that is exactly why we want our guns, but that that is the main reason for it being there. I have many reason why I feel so strongly about it. Let us remember when America gained it's independance from Britain, who had the Profesional Army? Who were the rag tag farmers who didn't know how to fight? Many times in the history of the world has civilians stood up to standing armies and came out on top. And by the way, Americans arn't like these people in the Middle East who stick an AK around the corner and fire off an entire clip. We like to be accurate and actually aim our rifles. I expect we would do much better than you give us credit for.
