I have just read a report quoting Indian doctors who say that several of the white people killed in Mumbai were first tortured - specially those Jewish people. And some of the terrorists were badly abused by Indian commandos before being killed by them.

There was 10-12 attackers, and it took 72 hours to bring the situation under control. Some cops died, some were injured, and some ran-can you imagine?

    I wasn't there, but it's obvious:

    A) Cops are poorly trained there

    B) Cops are poorly armed

    C) Mumbai has no SWAT team

    D) Mumbai PD needs a serious overhaul, from the bottom up.

From what I saw on TV, Munmbai PD wears a WW2 British Infantry officer uniform (no bullet resistant vest). With a new personality should come a whole new uniform. If you don't look like LE, you won't perform like LE.

I don't know why, but during the seige the North Hollywood shootout came to mind. LE had to think out of the box to remedy the situation. Mumbai PD had to wait on the Army to help. I also some indians using AK-47's. The AK is an awesome weapon at less than 25 feet, but it's accuracy seriously drops after that. I can think of a dozen weapons that would have been better for the situation.

I'm still shaking my head at the whole thing.

No Prob. I think people would like to read the whole article. And Why do you believe it? Until more comes out either officially or not there really isnt any proof other then this one article. What makes you believe it is true? So far its just unnamed "sources" and "doctors". Not verified. It may have happened or not. Until more comes out its is only a story. Ill wait until its more clear I think.

Quite right! That's why I said: "One now either believes it or one doesn't."

We are talking about something of a third world country here you know that right? They have other things to spend money on like feeding the population. Their forces are not going to be good as those of western nations now are they?

    ..Stefan...

we are talking about one of the powerhouses of the world economy and their Air Force (to take one example of their military potential) is equipped with a fleet of the latest variant of the Sukhoi Flanker. I often get the impression that they leave the feeding of their poor to our charitable organisations..

Hardly, the threat of war with Pakistan is largely the reason for the military buildup. As you say however, it is military 'potential,' troops don't have the training, kit and so on we regard as being normal.

Clearly however of course we are the ones feeding the poor in India, definately, they sure as hell aren't feeding themselves, ah well.

Why not- India has been a nuclear power since the early '70s, hasn't it?

They have nuclear power, yet every time there's a famine they stick their hands out for foreign aid?!

Local police are not equipped to deal with Terrorist threats on the level they faced in India. When multiple assailants are armed with automatic guns and bags full of grenades, local police do not have the resources to deal with it. They're not wearing body armor, nor do they have powerful guns. The LA Gunmen is a prime example.

Two bank robbers, armed with AK47's and Body Armor, were invulnerable to the local cops. The local cops were hiding behind cars. Several were wounded, and their rounds bounced off the two gunmen. There was nothing they could do. They had to go to gun-shops to get guns that were more powerful, and SWAT arrived but didn't help the situation. One gunman committed suicide. The other was shot in the ankles and legs before he went down and bled to death. All of this in the open. Can you imagine if these two had holed up inside a hotel?

I think you need to give the local police in India credit for their actions. In that particular area, crime is virtually non-existant. Maybe a few robbing etc, but its the wealthy, tourist area (Mumbai). I'm not even sure if they have the equivalent of a SWAT team since they don't get situations like we do in the US that require them.

In the US, I believe the National Guard often responds to similiar situations where large amounts of hostages/gunmen are factored in. I believe the response to the attacks - which were wide scale (10 different places) - were very practical. Local police, again, are not meant to deal with multiple attacks by an outside threat (thats what the Army is for). The Police are there to protect the civilians - crowd control, if you will - and I believe they performed to the best of their ability. The military is trained for that sort of thing, which is why they participated in the room-to-room clearing of a 500+ room hotel, instead of the Police.

Great post Mussolini. Actually, one has only to remember what happened in USA when those religious freaks locked themselves in a house (previous the part where the whole building was caught on fire). There was nothing the ATF Swat teams could do to enter the facility. It's hard to cope with trained Commandos just using regular police.
God knows that if such an accident was to happen in Portugal regular police would do nothing because they can't cope with it. We'd need our GOE and COE and Intervention corps and whatnot... In Monção (a small Portuguese village) when a Spanish gang of thugs went to rob the cell phone shop, the GNR would simply prevent the people from approaching the scene. They didn't have the weapons to take on heavily armed and armoured thugs.

    Cheers...

They weren't "attackers." They weren't "militants." They were TERRORISTS and very likely radical Islamic TERRORISTS. Call a spade a spade. Don't fall into that moral equivocation trap that Western journalists are in.

The info I have at this point: 195 death (26 + of those are westerners, including American, British , French and Australians ). One of the targets was a Jewish Religious center. This is were 6 hostages were killed when a terrosorist threw a handgrenade at them . There were apparently 10 terrorists who had prepared their attack a month in advance by booking rooms where they hid amno and weapons. Besides the hotels they also attacked the Victoria station. One terrorist was captured , the others shot.

I personally doubt the veracity of the torture allegations. It sounds as if one of two things are in play; the journalists are vying with each other to produce interesting articles and are fabricating theories about what happened by quoting the doctors out of context, or the doctors themselves are exaggerating the extent of the wounds. Someone "shot through both eyes" is not much evidence of deliberate torture. If one wanted to torture someone, they would hardly shoot them in the eye, which would be most likely to produce immediate death.

I think this is a case where one has to take the media reports with a very large dose of salt grains.

agreed, I believe there is still a state of confusion and the media would do anything to sell more than the competition. Apparently all ten terrorist came from Pakistan, but that does not mean Pakistan is behind this. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the terrorists also aimed to destroy Indian Pakistani relations which had been improving a bit lately.
