Same here, that's why I went ashore after a couple of years.
I worked underground in mines and tunnels for more than 15 years, among them 3156 working hours underground during a period of eight months. That was in Greenland during the winter of 1977/1978. Working 12 hours shifts plus travelling time, we didn't see daylight for four months.

However, I never felt confined and restricted in an underground working environment like I did as a sailor on a ship with the vast ocean around you.

A little bit strange, I never really understood why...

But now I'm derailing the thread, sorry..;)

"GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS!" Enlisted underage as I was 16 years old and legally one had to be 17 with parent's or legal guardian's consent or 18 without consent. I tried to enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, but they demanded proof like a birth ceritificate. After I served in the Army of the United States I joined the South Carolina Army National Guard, then the Maryland Naval Militia, and then the California State Military Reserve - going to jail instead can cause you a lot of problems after you are released and it is not worth it to be incarcerated. You get a nice uniform in the Army and that helped to pick up women and I liked a monthly paycheque too! Sarge Booker of Tujunga, California

When I was going through basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo (1977) about two weeks into training a bus pulled up and about two dozen "older" looking men (in their upper 20s to mid 30s) off-loaded and double timed towards our formation, falling in with us. I say "older" because most of us were teenagers, some a little older, in the early to mid 20s I guess. Anyway, these new "volunteers" were from the surrounding county prisons. Most were locked up for months, awaiting sentences, and when they finally got to face the judge, they were given the option to join the army or join the prison system. They didn't cause any problems for the drill sergeants or training cadre, but we were scared of them!

For clarification my offense was a DUI (driving under the influence of Drugs or Alcohol). It was the day I learned that the .08% level allowed is only a per se level of intoxication. They can arrest you at much lower levels (as was my case). I came to an agreement last week with the DA to have the offense stricken from my record since the arresting officer has since been fired for falsifying Police reports and unlawful stops.

I can only think of two reasons why a perfectly healthy citizen of any country (in the 21 century) would rather go to jail then the military when given a choice at a time of war (being invaded).
