Ike, can I assume this is the same fellow who was featured in the article you posted about the meeting of former enemies? If so, thanks for the additional information. Still quite a story. It also relates to a thread from earlier about whether the North Africa theater was more "gentlemanly" than other theaters.

Like how i said millions of times,I love these kinds of stories! This story reminds me of the WW1 truce with Germans Soldiers and British soldiers, getting togather and sharing things and not killing each other!

got any more of these stories?

A excellent display of chivalry on the battlefield. If only the Germans had conducted themselves in the same manner in the east.

    Hello Sloniksp,

    it actually happend !!

My grandfather though not a general but a Major at that time did have a simmilar meeting with Russian soldiers around the Caucasus area.

There is also a recorded incident incl. a piano play in Stalingrad.

Even such isolated incidents are impressive! I hope your grandfather did not get in trouble for such an act as im sure if "loyal Nazis" witnessed this, well he might have gotten himself in a bit of a pickle...?

The same of course can be said about commissars witnessing such encounters with the enemy. They would almost definitely be met by a firing squad.

Though there have been contact between the two sides in supply depots where food was the necessity and both understood this. They would get what was needed then go separate ways and fight another time. This mutual understanding and respect was well portrayed in a newly run Russian TV series called SHTRAFBAT, in which Russian soldiers raided a German supply dump and stumbled upon several German soldiers inside...
