I'm an "old chick", so I guess this is one of the few threads on which I feel qualified to comment. Personally? I absolutely hated "Pearl Harbor". So, ymmv with that one as a flick chicks will go for. Even chicks can see that thing is chock full of holes. :eyebrows: Some that I really enjoyed watching, but I don't vouch for on accuracy: Ike (although it's a trifle hard to find; Robert Duval does an interesting "take" on Eisenhower & most chicks will dig the innuendo/byplay between Ike and Kay Summersby (sp?)) Patton (the one with G.C. Scott; although I think somebody had an agenda when they made it, it was still enjoyable to watch) And one that only tangentially involves WWII, but is set during that era and usually much enjoyed by the ... ahmmmm cough choke "gentler-gender" is an oldie called The Scarlet and the Black. Gregory Peck plays a Catholic Monsignor at the Vatican who is working underground to save Allied personnel and Jews and whoever else needs saving from the local Nazi honcho (played by Christopher Plummer). Based on a true story, it's a good movie, imo. Hope you find some your lady will enjoy, Penny
Well "The boy in the striped pajamas" takes place during the Holocaust, and it's a pretty good movie. Recent, too.
The following is an extensive list of movies and a couple of made for tv films/miniseries that I have enjoyed and will probably appeal to many women, who have some interest or are willing to watch WWII movies. A world war II movie, to be a "Chick Flick" does not have to be a romance or be fluff - they have to have a story that involves character development (and if it has a happy ending its a bonus), not just a bunch of guns, blood, noise, and strategy. The ones I will list vary from purely entertaining such as Operation: Petticoat to drama that can't end with dry eyes such as Schindler's List. Some of the movies stick better to fact - others are pure fiction. The gentlemen have already mentioned some movie suggestions that I would have added, such as Australia, The Scarlet & The Black , and Casablanca . To save time, assume they have been properly underlined!! And you can't mention WWII movies without mentioning John Wayne - see Carl's links - The Wings of Eagles would probably be one of the more appealing WWII movies! I was getting ready to list 3 good ones, but Michelle just snowed me! Great list, Michelle! I second a number of them, particularly 'A Town Like Alice' - I really enjoyed that flick - takes place in Malaysia - and a relationship between an English woman and an Australian man, both Japanese POW's. Good show. How about 'The Guns of Navarone'? -whatever -Lou EDIT: That's the best kind! ...further demonstrating that DRECK is still DRECK, no matter WHO is watching it. If that's the movie that I'm thinking of, I believe it was Tom Selleck, not Robert Duvall. But, we might be talking about different films. -whatever -Lou
Thanks for the recent replies guys/gals. The list is ever growing. There is no way I could buy ALL of these movies at one time but I will look them up as I go along and pick some that I think we would like. This has turned out to be a very good thread. Lots of info and movies. Thanks to everyone for your posts. It helps me out a lot and I am sure other people on here will pick up a couple of these as well.
Try your local library. Many of our libraries carry DVD's for people to borrow with their library card. Some you will also catch on Turner Classic Movies.
Hi Lou! Yeah, we are talking about two different films. The copy I have of the one with Duval as Ike is on VHS tape. It was originally a television mini-series. I'd give my eye-teeth for a copy of it on DVD. More info on the "Ike" movie I referred to here: "Ike" (1979) The VHS tape is still available through some associated-sellers of Amazon here: Amazon.com: Ike: Robert Duvall, Lee Remick, Boris Sagal, Melville Shavelson: Video Regards, Penny p.s. Another one I don't remember seeing mentioned on this thread that I really liked was Tuskegee Airmen, starring Lawrence Fishburn. That unit (332nd Fighter Squadron) had one heck of a fine record.
After my weekend's viewing, I add The Miracle at St. Anna and Defiance to the list. There were a couple of scenes that caused my wife to avert her eyes but on the whole, she enthusiastically recommends both movies and has been telling her friends and family to watch both.
I guess I married the right kind of chick. When we met, she already had "A Bridge Too Far" and "The Big Red One" in her DVD collection. For those who liked "The War Lover," if you can find it, read a book by Martin Cadin called "Everything But The Flak." It's the story of getting three B-17's refurbished and flown to the UK for that movie. Hilarious reading.
