179th Infantry Regiment After Action Reports

I have scanned as pdfs the After Action Reports of the 179th
Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, for February, March,
and April 1944, which covers the toughest months of the
Anzio Campaign for the regiment. They are scanned at 200 dpi.

William Darby of Ranger fame was named CO of the Regiment
in February. His tenure was short-lived.

I had copied the documents at the NARA last month.

Hi Dave,

My grandfather's name was Charlie E. Hickson PFC. He was born in Goodland, Kansas and from stories that I remember him telling me when I was much younger I know that at one point he carried a BAR.

If you know any information that you could share, I would greatly appreciate it. I have scanned his Report of Seperation (which I got from my mother, his daughter) and it states that Awards received were 2 Bronze stars for Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. The specific dates for Service Outside Continental U.S. and Return are Arrival in Europe (17 Oct 43) and Departure from Europe (14 Sep 45).

I found a hand drawn portrait of my Grandfather as well from March of 1945. The signature of the artist might also match someone in the 179th? I was unable to attach it but could email it. The date on the sketch is 13-3-45 and signed A. Hazemann. I'm not 100% on the spelling of the name (primarily cause I'm not sure if it's a z or some other letter).

I went through my 1943 and 1944 Regimental General Orders twice and did not find
your grandfather listed under Company B for either CIB award or Good Conduct Medal.

Are you certain he belonged to Company B?

I'll look for Hazemann when I have time.

I only have the information in his Record of Separation to go off of and that shows CO B 179th INF and in going through his war stuff I found a unit patch which was a red diamond with a gold eagle on it (which I have found belongs to the 45th Infantry Division). Any suggestions of how I can find out which unit he might have belonged to?

Do you have any info on a 179th soldier named Pvt. Gentry Spurling ser.#37179938? He is listed as KIA in the NARA database of the Missouri war dead, But for some reason his name or serial number do not produce any results in the enlistment records. Thanks.

Many of the cards with enlistment data were not readable, so it is not uncommon to not find an individual's
record in the NARA database.

Spurling belonged to B Company of the 179th. i discovered his body was recovered by Paul Brown,
whose journal, fortunately, is still online:
