Hello Hans. I agree it was a very good film, have you seen the Band of Brothers tv series? If not I would recommend it highly. As a whole I would say it even betters SPR; a real masterpiece of film making imho.
It was shown on TNT twice lastnight back-to-back. Though im not a great fan of the film, ill still watch it-or at least have it on in the background-for noise.

The film seems to be quite realistic. I wonder if anyone here on the forum can tell us if thats what D-Day was really like and the end battle in the town? I can't imagine filming these sequences with any more realism than that.
I certainly can't tell you first-hand what D-Day was like. I enjoyed Saving Private Ryan, and agree that the opening 15 minutes was powerful. The rest of the movie was just OK in my book. My problem with almost any war movie is that I know it is just a film. I can never suspend my disbelief to really get caught up in it. Personally, I would rather watch archival footage and pictures of real people involved in real events. The little clip linked below, I think, is pretty good. I realize it's sanitized, but the people are real, and no one in any scene had to pretend to be someone else. D-Day - Video
I am not sure what the video contains (I will certainly have a look) but I doubt there was any cameramen in the first wave on D-Day. 'Private Ryan' maybe the closest we get to having footage of the first wave. I believe they went into painstaking detail on that sequence (and the final sequence in the town). Everything I have read about D-day coincides with what was on the screen there.
Unfortunately the video does not do service for the brave men who were shot, drowned and blown apart on that day which we know from writings. Even though in the film they are all actors, 'Private Ryan' brings the horror of D-Day into our living rooms so many more uninformed people (and why not, us too) can appreciate the sacrifice of those who really DID give their lives on that day.
I do not believe the beach assault in SPR is intended to be a first wave landing. In the film they main characters are Rangers. If I had to guess we are talking second, but most likely third wave. As I understand it 2nd Rangers landed at Point Du Hoc, but a late signal being sent meant that the remainder of the 2nd Rangers (A, B, and C companies) as well as most of the 5th Rangers would land on Omaha instead.
