There is a popular misconception that all Henry Tydr’s troubles came to an end on Bosworth Field in 1485 when the truth is that his reign was dogged by plots, discontent and uprisings. Two of these centred around Yorkist pretenders to his throne and whilst many people know a little about the second of these men, Perkin Warbeck, perhaps because of television dramatisations, very few have heard if the first, Lambert Simnel, whose rebellion two years after Bosworth threatened to plunge England once more into civil war and resulted in a bloody battle near Newark.

Dr. Christopher Scott, a member of the Battlefields Trust and a founder of the Guild of Battlefield Guides recently took a group of fellow historians and guides on a tour of the site of that battle and for it prepared a short lecture to set the engagement in context. It is an exciting story of opportunism, clandestine intrigue, high finance, and international wheeling and dealing which came to a bloody and dramatic climax and comes complete with tales of murderous atrocities and a walled-up skeleton..

"Conference: Conflict in Context: Archaeologies of War 1618 - 1918

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION is now open. Download the registration form as a PDF or Word document. For regular SPMA members, CONFERENCE REGISTRATION is available at a reduced rate of £45, and only £30 for SPMA members who are full-time students/under the age of 25. Reduced rates are also available for members of local archaeology societies in Liverpool and Merseyside.

This conference will provide an archaeological comparative perspective, considering warfare and its impact from the seventeenth century to the First World War. It will be held at the Museum of Liverpool, which houses important regional archaeological collections including much post-medieval material and also curates the King's Regiment Collection.
The conference coverage is European and includes maritime archaeology. The intended range of topics includes:

• Warfare and armaments, including artefacts and fortifications
• Warfare and tactics, including battlefields
• Lifeways of the military, including barracks and diet
• Impact on civilians

The formal Call for Papers has now closed, but further papers addressing elements of battlefield archaeology from the English Civil War to the First World War are invited, as are posters for display. A postgraduate archaeology conference day sponsored by SPMA will be held at the University of Liverpool, 11am - 5.30pm on Friday 26th September, where research students can contribute papers on any aspect of post-medieval archaeology. A WINE reception to commence the Conflict in Context conference will be held at the University of Liverpool on Friday 26th September with the main conference sessions at the Museum of Liverpool on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September. The Museum is close to other parts of National Museums Liverpool, including the World Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum.

This conference, organised by the British Commission for Military History (BCMH) in association with the Department of History, Politics and War Studies, University of Wolverhampton, intends to highlight current research being undertaken by postgraduate and early career scholars in the field of military history and related disciplines.
This is the British Commission for Military History’s fifth annual New Research conference giving postgraduate and early career scholars an excellent opportunity to meet, share new ideas and discuss the latest research. Papers on any aspect or period of military history are welcome. "From ‘Shooting the Front’ to Combat ISTAR Conference 2015

A Conference to be held at the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon in conjunction with the Royal Air Force Centre for Air Power Studies.

From air observation and photographic reconnaissance in the First World War through to the emergence of Combat ISTAR, effective intelligence gathering has been at the heart of air operations since the birth of air power. Indeed, air power made its first appearance on the battlefield when a balloon was used during the Battle of Fleurus in 1794 in the observation role. Since then, air power has been able to provide longer, deeper and more persistent forms of information collection. Furthermore, the provisional Training Manual of the Royal Flying Corps stated in 1914 that, ‘The most important role of aircraft in war is reconnaissance’. More recently, AP3000, the modern Royal Air Force’s capstone doctrine, has codified ‘Intelligence and Situational Awareness’ as one of the Service’s four fundamental roles. As we move through the period of the centenary of the First World War and towards the 100th Anniversary of the RAF’s formation, the time is precipitate to explore the importance of aerial based reconnaissance and intelligence gathering and its effect on war in all its facets.

This two-day conference invites papers dealing with any of the topics below. In addition to established academics, the organisers are keen to receive proposals from postgraduate students, early careers scholars and those with professional experience. Panel proposals of three speakers and a chair are welcomed. Papers on other themes are also encouraged.

The RAF and Operation GRANBY: 25 Years On

21st - 22nd February 2015

As part of our rolling calendar of events, the RAF Museum's Aviation Historian, Ross Mahoney, will be giving a free lecture on the subject of 'The RAF and Operation GRANBY: 25 Years On'. This talk will examine the vital role the RAF played during the Gulf War, 1990-91. It will also consider the state of the RAF on the eve on the conflict, the many lessons learnt and the Service’s continuing role over Iraq from enforcing no-fly zones to its employment against Islamic State today.

The Royal Flying Corps and the Western Front in 1915: Myths and Realities

As part of the RAF Museum's First World War in the Air Lunchtime Lecture Series, Dr James Pugh will speak on 'The Royal Flying Corps and the Western Front in 1915: Myths and Realities'.​

TALK OUTLINE
The year 1915 has been called the ‘black hole’ of First World War history. As such, 2015 affords the perfect opportunity to shine some light on one of the least explored periods of the conflict. The lecture will investigate the myths and realities of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and its role on the Western Front during 1915. This will include an examination of doctrine, policy, and practice; with a particular focus on the RFC’s approach to the control of the air. The lecture will conclude with an examination of the command changes that took place in the RFC during 1915; a process affected by the challenging personal relationships that existed between the senior officers of the Corps.

ABOUT DR JAMES PUGH
James Pugh holds a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Military and International History (Salford), an MA in International History (Wales), and a PhD in Modern History (Birmingham). James is currently a Visiting Lecturer with the University of Birmingham, specialising in Air Power Studies and the history of the First and Second World Wars. He has published on air power doctrine and leadership, and he is currently researching the aircrew experience and aviation medicine in RAF Bomber Command between 1940 and 1945. His first monograph, The Royal Flying Corps, the Western Front, and the Control of the Air, 1914–18, is due for publication with Ashgate in 2017.

 

Bomber Command and Political Warfare, 1939-1945: The Missing Dimension

As part of the RAF Museum's new Research Programme, Professor Richard Overy will deliver the first talk in our new series, The Trenchard Lectures in Air Power Studies. Professor Overy will speak on 'Bomber Command and Political Warfare, 1939-1945: The Missing Dimension'.

TALK OUTLINE
Among the many things Bomber Command was asked to do, its role in assisting British political warfare has been largely neglected by historians. Yet the 1.5 billion leaflets and newspapers dropped over Europe during the war, as part of a protracted campaign of political propaganda was only possible because of the co-operation of Bomber Command. The lecture examines the origins and course of the airborne propaganda offensive and the close relations that eventually emerged between the Air Ministry and the Political Warfare Executive. Both had an interesting in breaking German morale and both saw the bomb and the leaflet as complementary weapons in the campaign to undermine the enemy war effort. Despite Air Chief Marshal Sir Harris's opposition, the operational effort was entirely in the hands of Bomber Command and was sustained right down to the last weeks of the war.

ABOUT PROFESSOR RICHARD OVERY
Richard Overy is Professor of History at the University of Exeter and Chair of the RAF Museum Research Board. He is the author of more than 25 books on air power, the Second World War and the European dictatorships including The Battle of Britain, The Air War 1939-1945 and most recently The Bombing War: Europe 1939-1945, winner of one of the Cundill Awards for history in 2014.
