How do you display your Militaria collection

oh i didnt see your post kruska......no i had'nt heard of it before now but im learning something new every day (right or wrong)

 

I display my items on a bookshelf. I don't have any pics, and my collection is very small, but it's the best way I have found. As for my pictures, I display my copies of my favorite photos in frames on the wall. Keeping the originals in a safe place, away from the sunlight!

 

As Gomer Pyle must have once said: "G-g-g-g-g-good golly miss molly" nice stash of headgear-as well as any other stuff shown already ;-))

Sadly, I have nothing on special display-and heres the rundown.

My Dads WWII steel pot is sitting unceremoniously on top of my Wardrobe-along with Skippers near future 3 piece LW (Luftschutz) Gladiator Helmet--collecting a light covering of dust till I can reach up there to swipe them clean.

Inside one side of my wardrobe-that's dedicated only for militaria-is hanging on wooden hangers-my Army Majors tunic, two of my Dads Korean War Tunics, and my Opas WWII Navy Captains tunic. On this same side of the wardrobe bottom area filled up with new purchased books-read but not placed in a proper place. Most of my badges and cloth are stashed inside two boxes-one wood one metal. My three photo albums containing approx 400++ pics are sitting near me (well, only one album is-because the other two are at a place awaiting their contents to be scanned to photo CDs for em) and I have probably another 50 pics stashed away and unpacked since the move here.

On that same side include my four original Harpers Weekly covers that show various portraits and other scenes dealing with the Imperial German Army at battle with the French in the Franco-Prussian War (all originals printed in 1870) The one surviving original movie poster I have which is a half-sheet) from a theater in Michegan-that is of the war movie: Away All Boats-which starred Jeff Chandler and Lex Barker-and guess which very young and within a decade later-would soon be an international Movie Star? who is one of the medical personnel on that same ship as Chandler is on. Anyone here think they know which superstar this is im talking about? If so-guess here and if correct-you win a Cookie ;-))

I also have a 4-page sometime in 1943-printed Honor List - which were published every two weeks-that shows a list of mens names who were awarded the German Cross in Gold. The one I have also has the names of over ten future Knights Cross Recipients on it. All told, I THINK this list has about 80 names on it-all Army and Waffen SS.

On the other side of the wardrobe-my 1923-or 1925 made Party Banner sits unceremoniously folded on top of which sits my KM Offiziers overseas cap and on top of that is my Arty Majors peaked visored cap. Sitting in front of these are two pairs of shoulderboards I got thanks to Kruskas generosity :-D as well as two pair of hard-to-get Officers collartabs I got within the past few months and that I have been too lazy to put away yet. Underneath them sits my bayonet collection and my dads WWII G.I. webbed belt still has his cartridge pounches on it, his canteen with cover, and some extra webbed pouch he attached to it. My three Walther P-38 holsters all sit on the top shelf of the wardrobe. Still sitting in the plastic bags they arrived in are: my War Merit Cross w/swords 1st class, two more War Merit Crosses with swords 2nd class, another General Assault Badge (solid back) another Silver Infantry Assault Badge unmarked semi-hollow B.H. Meyer) and I can't remember what else is in there without looking?

However, I can partially answer your question on how I have stuff displayed. I have all seven (so far and an 8th soon to arrive) of my award docs in plastic stands and all are on the shelf I installed that sits above my curtained window ;-))

In case your interested? the award docs are: 1917 EK & award doc to a man in the 3rd Marine Infantry Regiment-I also have both of his Iron Crosses, a four award doc group to a soldier by the name of Grell (cool last name aint it?) that are of his EKII, WMC w/Swords 2nd, BWB and Frozen Meat Medal (plus all six of his awards-minus his Krim Shield since the dealer eh hem ""misplaced it"" so only time will tell when I get that in to complete this deal. Finally (for now) I have two award docs to the same man-which I think are his Frozen Meat Medal and KVK w/swords 2nd. And soon to arrive and ill brag about it here now ;-)) the next awar doc im getting is to a man who (one of between 631-to-633 men) who were awarded the Close Combat Clasp in Gold. Thanks to a nice member here-and WILL knows who he is ;-)) that's how im getting this highly researchable award doc :-D Now if I could only snag me a CCiG itself.

Hi Andy, I had some pics I took earlier this year but they were taken from one of those disposable cameras (a cheap one at that) and most looked good but several important ones looked bad-so I never got around to taking more pics yet.

Im planning on seeing if I can use my brothers digital camera and see if I can get detailed pics from it of makers marks and details. However, he misplaced it and thinks he left it at a friends house in Austin I admit I am a bit disorganized but-my brother takes the cake on disorganization ;-))

 

no worries Carl - im in the same boat......when im at college things are fine, but back at home......im so disorganized (me little brother has taken my room, sister taken his etc so i actually have no "space" of my own)

Well, I currently have a couple ways of displaying items.

My books are stacked all over, and I have to sift through tons of things to find them.

The Soviet helmet I have is currently sitting on a shelf. My patches are also on the shelf, awaiting a frame.

My grandfather's documents/medals are also waiting to be put in some sort of frame.

A couple other things are sitting on a shelf, as well.

What do you guys recommend to purchase next? [Nothing too excessive in price at the moment. 0-$50 would be the target price, but something a bit higher would be fine, thanks!]

 

sounds good carl,just need to organise them for display,I'm sure you'll get better pleasure from them if you do,rather than bits here and there,anyway shame not to display,as you have a lot of good stuff,ray..

Thanks for the topic, I've been wanting to ask this question myself. Unfortunately, I haven't got any of my items displayed yet.

I'm going to frame or mount most of my items but I've been debating on whether to display my weapons or not. I'd definitely like them out but I'm a bit concerned about their security.

 

no problem mfortney......its very interesting to see what people actually do with their stuff - im actually surprised as to how many of us "Don't display" our stuff, or maybe not the way we want too

Hi Ray, im as disorganized as ever. My war room where this computer is-though a good sized room-still doesn't have much space for doing much with. My German Army recruting posted-for MG Troops-is framed and such-just never got around to hanging it on the wall. Same goes for my Mauser Sniper variant, my 1898 Krag Carbine and my Walther P-38. All my weapons except for my Walther-are currently residing in my Nephews gun safe. My Walther sits all alone in my war rooms closet.

I am thinking of having the 4 award doc group along with the six awards that were part of the (Grell Group) framed and mounted on the wall. This group just looks absolutely great.

Other than the above-im still disorganized ;-)) Im glad about one thing about now having enough space to display my stuff-only means because I have a lot of stuff-but never enough :-D
