The Russian snipers of ww2 racked up some amazing kill totals on the battlefield. Here are just a few. I will have more Names and kills for you in a few days. knabe
Must say would like to have more info on that/those top snipers as they did not exist/(kill numbers have increased since ) a couple of years ago in any lists to my knowledge, besides there was another Finn listed five years ago in top three, which actually turned out to be Simo Häyhä with just a little changed lifestory. http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-general/26495-mihail-ilyich-surkov.html
I'm currently looking into the German snipers kill records. Will have some to post soon. As far as the Russian sniper not existing, I suppose that might be true, the Russians where always trying to buff people. But I got the names and numbers from some solid sources, so I don't know. knabe
Like said in the other thread, now that the famous Prokhorovka battle with T-34´s ramming tens of Tigers out-of-action has been proved not to have existed, simply giving names and top figures without pictures and life stories do not make any impression on me.
If I can add another question. What about Russian WOMEN snipers. I read something a long time ago about how they trained women snipers. Any info on these brave ladies ? I'll check my Russians literature tomorrow for some names and facts. Best Regards To All
This is true. Over 800,000 women served their Motherland in World War II; nearly 200,000 of them were decorated and 89 of them eventually received the Soviet Union’s highest award, the Hero of the Soviet Union. And as you said, the Soviets used women snipers extensively. The Soviets thought that the sniping role fit women well as it required a steady, careful, patient hand and often required less hand-to-hand fighting than a regular infantry soldier. A very famous Soviet woman sniper is Lyudmila Pavlichenko who is credited with over 300 kills.
on the link ww2snipers you'll see female names too, look to the right and scroll down and it'll tell female, from that you should be able to trace them by name..
worlds greatest female sniper who ever lived, russian lyudmila pavlichenko. www.snipersparadise.com/history/pavlichenk.htm
Two of the German Armies top scoring snipers were: Matthias Hetzenhauer and Sepp Allerberger. I wrote to Sepp Allerberger last year and got a quick reply and signed photo. I can't give their numbers but I can give a list of snipers who also had the RK if interested? I forgot the name of the 3rd man as part of the names above making them the trio of the top scoring German snipers of WWII. His name is on the tip of my tongue and ill list it as soon as I remember his name--unless Kai or Sniper beats me to it first ;-)) Oh and Kai is correct, Simo H/ is the top most scoring sniper of the war and was a Finnish Soldier. A great book or two recently came out about he and his skills. You can find the title for that book in my Eastern Front titles book thread-I don't remember which page. Sepp Allerberger was at least nominated for the Knights Cross, now if he ever recieved the award-I am not sure. Matthias Hetzenhauer got his RK in April 1945. Allerberger I think was nominated for his slightly after the war ended. therefore, I don't think that the OdR accepts him as an RKT so you will normally not see a photo of him wearing one even though I have seen at least one photo of him wearing an RK.
The following list are some German Snipers who were also RKTs. The ones in all Caps I know for a fact are Sniper RKTs, the others I have not checked out with Paul or any other source and all of these names I got from somewhere about 10 or so years ago--I cannot remember where? Undoubtedly a few or a lot of these names may not belong here but three for sure-do belong here. Also, undoubtedly names are missing that do belong here-I don't have them. JOACHIM HEIDSCHMIDT, MATTHIAS HETZENHAUER, Heinrich Krappmann, Hubert Lancier, Ulrich Laschet, Herbert Lindner, Rolf Mohr, Wilhelm Moser, Gunter Muhlke, Franz Muttenthaler, Heinrich Nelles, Karl Oberkircher, Otto Pagelow, Walter Pape, FRIEDRICH PEIN, Josef Preiss, August Rappel, Kurt Reuter, Emil Richter, Hans Rosenheinrich, Johann Rottensteiner, Johann Sandner, Josef schimmele, Leopold Schrems, Walter Schulze, Rudolf Schwarzgruber, Albert Staubach, Karl-Heinz Tesch, Max Vetter, Willi Vickendey, Benno Weber, Paul Weiss, Rudolf Wessel, Xaver Wiest, Johann Windisch, Eugen Zehnder, Sepp Allerberger I list seperately because apparently the OdR (Ordnungsgemeinschaft der Ritterkreuzetrager) does not recognize him officially as an RKT.
One thing to remember that during Stalingrad, Russian snipers had orders to kill civilians who were working or cooperating with german troops. A lot of these snipers got famous during battle of Stalingrad. Women who were doing laundry for Germans to get food or because their children were held hostage were shot. Children bringing water for the Germans from Volga river, in order to get food were also shot.
Mmm-no, Heidschmidt wasn't @ Stalingrad. Neither were; Hetzenhauer, Krappmann, Lancier, Laschet, Muhlke, Oberkircher, Paegelow, Pape, Pein, Preiss, Rappel, Reuter, Richter, and most if not all of the rest of these listed above. I have not had time to check the others to be 100% certain but I do have a list of Stalingrad RKTs and I don't think any of these names are on the list. Ill check if I can remember to do so. You will find the vast majority of your German Snipers mostly came from Jager and Gebirgsjager units. Some of the above came from Regular line Rifle units and some ARE or later became Snipers.
Mr. Evans, Sorry this is off topic, but the 36th ID National Reunion is in San Antonio, Sept. 3-5. Not many vets left and I'm trying to juggle my schedule to get down to your great state. Met with P. Stickle 2 years ago in San Antonio, she is the moderator for the respectable 36th web site. She is a great person as you well know. Just thought I give a Texan a heads up !! Best Regards
The Soviets credit Mikhail Surkov with 702 kills. While this is more then what Simo was credited with, Simo, got his remarkable count in only 100 days and most of the kills were snipers!
Hi Steve, definately no problem and-believe it or not but-come Tues or Wed next week, I will be visiting the ladys mother who now lives in S.A. Im going there for a few days starting tomorrow afternoon or Sunday morning. I don't think ill be in the area for that reunion but-i'd sure love to go there. Millie Wiley was Greggs husband. You most likely heard about him? I met him years ago when both Milli and my Mom worked for the same Reality Company in Kingsville. Gregg was VERY nice and I regret that I never had many chances to talk with him before he passed away. Anyway, Gregg had been one of Roosevelts Honor Guard. I don't know details but and if my memory is not as bad as I think it is? Gregg was a Sergeant and had been chosen for his duty as one of Roosevelts guards. I would give my eye-teeth-to be able to go back in time and talk to Mr. Wiley again. Im hoping that when my Brother and I go see Millie, I am hoping I can possibly get a few pics of Gregg from her-or see if she can make some copies and send them to me-i'd love to have his story along with pics-on this site. On a future trip to S.A. I am hoping to visit the 36th ID museum. I have not seen their Daughter in at least 18-20 yars. I think I only met her once? not sure? Mr. Wiley was a great person to talk with-when one could have a few moments with him. ;-)) Mr. Wiley is also a personal hero of mine. For anyone to even survive the crossing of the Rapido and the attacks towards Monte Cassino in their own right are lucky to have survived. If you ever make it to the Houston area-please look me up-ill take you to Fajita Willies-which is a great place to eat at ;-)) Take care--Carl. PS, i'll ask Mille to pass on a hello from you to her Daughter ;-))
