Just a article I came across. MAX HASTINGS: Churchill, the flawed giant who saved our nation - and our world | Mail Online
Richard, A must read on Sir Winston Churchill Great thread. Around the world, he remains overwhelmingly the most famous Briton, living or dead, the embodiment of his nation's past greatness, its commitment to democracy and freedom. all the best, Jem
Perhaps the most famous modern Briton. But Shakespeare is the best known Englishman of all time. Dave
And for all the wrong reasons. It's sad to think that people would probably be more likely to recognize her name than either Churchill or Shakespeare.
depends who you ask ..recent bbc greatest briton was indeed winston when uk public were sampled..not shakespere..certainly not di..as to famous that is a totally different question to greatest and today is more likely to produce simon cowell or david beckham but to be fair the two questions differ..greatest....recognise....even brits can fathom thhe difference.
Thanks for the article I enjoy reading Max Hastings work. As for the most famous Briton I think it just depends who you ask. Didn't they do a survey with youngsters a few months ago and the majority of them thought that Winston Churchill was the dog from the car insurance adverts.
To my mind Winston Churchill is one of the most important persons not only in WWII but it the period of XX century. He was first in Britain who saw danger in Europe in 1939 and he was the one who made steps which saved Great Britain. He started the Cold War by his speech and it lasts for past 45 years... Opinions about Winston Churchill are different but meaning of this person is no doubt for everyone and there are no one who don't know who is Winston Churchill.
This Merkin would agree with you. FDR did good, but he wasn't on the pointy end of the stick like Winnie was.
