Just got this info from a friend who works in the film-making industry that, it's in the rumor mill that Decision Before Dawn is to be remade in 2011 and remade with the title of the book that spawned Decision Before Dawn-which is called: Dare Call It Treason. It's been alleged that Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, and Tom Hanks all have been approached to play the character of: Lt. Rennick-which was originally and excellently played by Richard Basehart. Noted German Actor: Thomas Kretschmann is also rumored to portray the Luftwaffe Medical Obergefrieter Karl Maurer character-also known as "Happy" and Bruno Ganz is alleged to have been approached to play the character of "Tiger" that was originally and most excellently portrayed by Hans-Christian Blech.

If the above choices are true? hell yes im going to go see it in the theaters ;-))

For those who are not aware of Decision Before Dawn as well as Howes book: Dare Call It Treason. That book was done and tells alleged true stories of German POWs who wind up working for the Allies by volunteering to spy for them on missions that they are supposed to go on in order to locate where certain German Forces are. The "Spy" team was lead by Lt. Rennick, and once they get the info required, they are supposed to find Lt. Rennick in Mannheim-and link up with him and then get back to Allied lines with said info and in the process, keep from being caught by the Feldgendarmerie and Geheimestaatspolizei (aka) the Gestapo.

If this movie stays true to its origins-this WILL be one hell of an excellent movie. Heck with the proposed cast possibilities, you can see that this movie WILL be well made. ;-D

Hi Ray, it's one I have hoped so much for so many years that could have a chance at being remade. A very good and very longtime friend of mine who works as a Producer in the Film Industry (nobody famous) knows that Decision Before Dawn is my alltime most favorite movies as well as also having a Favorite actor of mine in it-Richard Basehart. Anyway, I got an email from him telling me that he just saw some paperwork to the effect-when he was in somebody's Office at a Studio-studio name not given-darn it ;-))

ANyway, my fingers are crossed for good luck in this possibility becoming a reality. If it does become a reality, an either a filming or somekind of pre-production date for the movie will be sometime in 2011. This is going to drive me a bit nuts untill then ;-))

Oh and, if this does get remade and filming starts-just remember THIS is the first posting on the internet about that possibility ;-)) I almost feel like a Pioneer-because of this "heads-up." :-D

There are so many topics to chose from when making a movie based around ww2. I just wish they would tell more of the stories that should be told rather than keep re-making ones that have already been told.

 

I agree with all of ya on all accounts. Im just glad that a possible new WWII movie is going to be made-er-rather, remade ;-))

I'd also like to see more movies made that are like: The Heroes of Telemark for example. Also, a good movie made about Pattons "folly" which is to do with that raid he made on a PoW camp trying to rescue his Son-in-Law.

 

I watched that movie from Netflix a few months ago, and I believe that it was very well made. I don't know if the current crop of today's movie makers can top that production, but like Carl said, I will go and see it when it hits the cinema. But as mentioned, there are too many incidents that occurred in WW2 that would provide much better subject matter for a new movie, or mini-series. For example, the 1st hand experiences of the American POWs of the Japanese that posted their exploits here on the forum. Ah well, can't have everything.

There's a question that I have from watching the original "Decision Before Dawn." When Happy and Tiger were dropped in behind the lines, seems like right away they were suspects. How did their names get on the lists of the German MPs at the checkpoints so quick? You could almost feel their dispair while waiting to have their papers checked almost, at least for me anyway. I always wondered how the Gestapo and MPs got their lists updated so quick. Man, they must have been pretty good!

 

Hi A, a great movie the original sure was/is ;-)) As for answering your question about how they became suspect so quickly--I can't honestly answer it but (and unseen)--they could have made some sort of minor error on paperwork or on some answers dealing with their "units" location and such.

 

I agree that DBD is one of the great classic WWII movies. I first saw it when I was a kid in the 60s, and what impressed me the most was seeing the Sdkfz 251 - I think that was the first (and probably only) time I've seen actual German armor in a Hollywood movie. I guess, because it was partly filmed in Europe (I think) shortly after the war, there was a lot of equipment available to the filmmakers who wisely saw the vaule even then. Hopefully, the remake will be as good, but sadly that's not usually the case.

 

Hi FS, also what you see in DBD -meaning the rubble and uniforms-medals and such as well as all the extras-were the read deal-real German vets portraying the extras in the film.

Also, another film I consider as good as this one is, and that also shows the actual rubble of bombed out Cities-real uniforms and insignias and such is: A Time To Love and a Time To Die.

 

I hope it's not just a rumor and that they will shoot the remake

 

Hi Skipper, same here. My friend didn't say much about it other than seeing some paperwork on someones desk whose office he was in for some reason ;-)) That movie certain does deserve a high class remake though ;-))

Also, as for the story of having Germans working for the Allies-I wish others would be made even if pure fiction.
