Where wouldn't you serve in ww2

I would not serve any were outside the us.

 

Neither in an u-boot or submarine: claustrophobia.

 

For me:

• Eastern Front (in fact, anywhere near the Soviets)
• Okinawa/Tarawa/Iwo Jima/Guadalcanal with the Allies (wouldn't mind being on some of the "quieter" islands, as long as I wasn't in the first landing wave)
• Anywhere alongside the Japanese (despite war crimes and such, these fellows seemed to have it a lot harder than everyone else)
• Omaha Beach on either side
• Market-Garden (north of Nimegan) with the Allies
• Falaise Pocket with the Germans
• Monte Cassino with the Allies
• U-boats (I'll pass on the 70% mortality rate)

I salute those who served in these places.

 

Aleutions and CBI for me.

It would be great to have a cushy job in the rear in Italy and Sicily.

 

How much of a choice did you get? From that, I'd choose to avoid the Infantry at all costs. Isn't there some aircraft that need repairing?

 

Singapore, Java, Papua and New Guinea.
Either as a Allied or Japanese combatant.
As the Japanese said Papua and New Guinea was death.
Australians lost 10's of 000's of men due to sickness.

China, or be posted to Hiroshima or Nagazaki areas during mid 1945.

 

I wouldn't want to serve in the pacific. the japenese charges can be devestating and painful. if you are captured by the japenese you will be given food infested with mice droppings, maggots, ants, cockaroachs, and the rice will not be properly prepared. you will work most of the day and if you try to escape, your room mates will be shot and if you are captured you will probably be torchered to death. you can read about this in the book, The Pacific.

Maybe someone said this before . . . but ANYWHERE outside the United States. Remember the United States had only 48 states then, so no Hawaii and no Alaska. Good ol' 48 lower for ME, baby!

 

I would not serve in Graves Registration

 

Where I would want to Not be----- As I worked for a natural gas processing facility(in New Mexico) that I think was of German design in its basics, and experienced a couple major fires there in processing natural gas for New Mexico(I found I was not brave at all).......I would not want to be working in any like facility in Germany with the B-17's making me the preferred target for their bomb loads. I guess it would be something like sitting in the middle of the Ammo dump while bombers tried hard to light it off. You would not be hard for them to find as your safety blowdown flare would be the beacon bringing them in even if they were bad at navigating. At night I could tell aircraft used the local flare to navigate their way to our local airport as it was a very visible marker. I don't know if it is still as prominent....EPA has reduced most of them. However this had to be a very bad job to have if you lived in Germany when the Allies were making target of your business.

Where I would want to be----My dad had good memories of his time spent in Hawaii as I still have his souvenir hoola skirt. Don't tell anyone.

 

I would definitely steer clear of submarines - I get really claustrophobic in cramped spaces.

 

The British soldiers who arrived to defend Java in early '42 were poorly equipped, had the might of the Japanese army in its prime bearing down on them and they were prisoners before they could say 'Where is the RAF?'
They then spent almost 4 years in Japanese camps.

 

I wouldn't want to be in the CBI theater. "The Forgotten Army." They didn't get that moniker 'cause it sounded cool, they got it because they were the bottom of the list for everything.

May I suggest you to apply for the position of military attaché in Rio, Brazil.

 

Besides staying away from submarines !! "volunteering " to fly in the Japanese Special AttacK Corps ( Kamakaze ) comes to mind. Having my life reduced to that of a guidance system for a Mitsubishi missle doesn't sound very appealing...
